Wolves Preview

It’s been an excellent campaign for Wolves on their return to the top flight and having retaken seventh spot in the Premier League last week, their attention now turns to what has been an impressive FA Cup run so far. Their third-round tie could barely have been more difficult for them when drawn against a Liverpool team who were clear at the top of the league and in the best form of their season when the game was played. That ended up working in Wolves’ favour as Jurgen Klopp elected to field a weakened side to concentrate on other competitions, but it was still an excellent performance and one that was deserving of the win. The last two rounds have been testing despite being against lower league opposition as Wolves have required a replay to get beyond League One Shrewsbury – and were pushed all the way in that replay – whilst it was a narrow 1-0 win away to Bristol City in the last round, a team who were flying in the Championship. This is a club who have a proud history in the FA Cup with four wins – the last of which came back in 1960. They’ve not enjoyed anywhere near that level of success since, though, with their last quarter-final appearance 16 years ago, but this is a new-look Wolves who tend to enjoy raising the bar at Molineux.

Key-Facts – Wolves v Manchester United

  • Both Wolves and United have had challenges en route to this quarter-final stage
  • United were beaten finalists last year and won it back in 2019 whilst this is the further Wolves have reached in over a decade
  • Wolves have performed admirably against the top teams this season and drew with United at Old Trafford earlier in the season

Manchester United Preview

United suffered their first defeat in any domestic competition under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last week when losing 2-0 away to Arsenal in the Premier League. You could also argue it was their only meaningful defeat with the only other reverse being the 2-0 loss to PSG in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 game – which they went on to turn around so dramatically in the second leg, of course. The interesting thing for Solskjaer will be to see what the reaction is from his players following that loss and the next game being another away match at a difficult venue. It’s a United team who are used to it in this competition, though, having already had to see off both Arsenal and Chelsea away from home en route to the quarter-finals, in what has been an impressive passage so far. United’s recent record in the FA Cup is also impressive with a final appearance last season and winning it for the 12th time in 2016. Top four and progression in the Champions League may well be greater priorities but the United support live for winning trophies and this is one they will not want to let go now they’re in the final stages.

Wolves v Manchester United Betting Advice

Whilst Manchester City remain in the reckoning for this year’s FA Cup, neither of these teams are going to be favourites to win it but that is something that will suit Wolves and United who have enjoyed going about their business in an understated way this season. The hosts proved once again how capable they are against the top teams last weekend in their draw away to Chelsea (a game they should have won) so their weekend opponents will be well aware of the danger they pose having drawn with Wolves at Old Trafford earlier in the season.

One of the new rules of the FA Cup is that games at this stage of the competition are played to a finish rather than going to a replay – and you sense it could well be a tie that requires extra-time and even penalties such is how it’s finely balanced. That appeared to be the case when the draw was made and everything that’s happened since has only reaffirmed that it’s a game between two very talented teams, although in very different ways. Wolves’ record against the top teams speaks for itself and I suspect this is a tie that will go the distance on Saturday.
