Preview: Wolves will be targeting a third straight win in the Premier League when they welcome a Southampton side desperate to halt a three game losing streak in the league to Molineux Stadium. A home win seems a formality on that basis, however Wolves have won once at home all season (W1 D2 L1), whereas Southampton can boast double that amount in away wins (W2 L2).

Wolves Preview – Will Nuno Santo celebrate third successive league win?

No team entered the international break with more pomp and a swagger than Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves, whose triumphant performance at The Etihad over Manchester City came as a huge surprise. Not least because Wanderers had begun the season in disappointing fashion, failing to record a win in their opening six league fixtures before stringing together successive 2-0 scorelines at home to Watford and away to the reigning league champions.

What made the display at Man City all the more remarkable was that they were in Turkey competing in Europe less than three days earlier. For them to produce a collective effort of that magnitude and intensity, particularly from a defensive point of view where they truly excelled in limiting a free-scoring outfit to zero goals, was astonishing. It was, however, a third consecutive clean sheet in all competitions, as a backline which proved leaked in the early parts has suddenly shored itself up.

Wolves are now up into eleventh in the Premier League table, four points adrift of the top six and those coveted European places. A third straight league win would ensure that gap is reduced further, although just one win at home all season (W1 D2 L1, GF6 GA7) means three points are far from guaranteed despite their recent heroics and said improvements. Though another inspired display from forward Raul Jimenez wouldn’t go amiss, the Mexican who assisted both goals against Man City and has two league goals himself.

Southampton Preview – Can Hasenhüttl’s side avoid fourth straight league defeat?

The Saints have endured a torrid start to the Premier League season. Just three teams have fared worse after eight matches (W2 D1 L5, GF8 GA15), with Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side hovering precariously above the relegation zone in 17th after three straight defeats to Bournemouth (1-3), Tottenham (2-1) and more recently Chelsea (1-4). Although there are mitigating circumstances.

The early fixtures were not kind on Southampton, who have already faced four of last season’s top six of which three were at St. Mary’s. Their away fixtures were more forgiving and The Saints should be commended for taking full advantage of some, losing first time out at Burnley (3-0) but registering priceless victories at Sheffield United (0-1) and Brighton (0-2). They could also consider themselves very unfortunate not to have taken at least a point from their trip to Tottenham (2-1).

A player who has been a bright spark during dim times has been striker Danny Ings. The former Liverpool man has four goals in his last three competitive games, including the consolation goals in their recent defeats against Tottenham and Chelsea. The 27-year-old is 3/1 with Betfair to score for the third successive league fixture; however, all three of his strikes in the league this season have come in defeats.

Wolves V Southampton Key Facts:

  • Wolves have won their previous two Premier League games – the latest away to Man City (0-2) – and are targeting a third consecutive victory in all competitions.
  • Southampton are on a three game losing streak in the league, losing 4-1 at home to Chelsea last time out, but have, nevertheless, scored in all-but one league game this season.
  • Last season’s Molineux Stadium meeting finished 2-0 to Wolves, who haven’t lost at home to Southampton since 2007 (W2 D1 since).

Betting Summary

The Wolves team should be on a high after claiming the impressive scalp of Manchester City in their last fixture, although whether any of those good vibes have subsided during the recent international break remains to be seen. Wins in their last two league matches – three in all competitions, and all without conceding – is form substantially better than that of their opponents.

A tricky set of opening fixtures has left Southampton languishing near the bottom of the table. The break came at an opportune time for them, though, having lost for the third league game in a row prior, the latest of which a 4-1 hammering at home by Chelsea. On their travels, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have collected six of their seven points so far, while only away to Burnley on the opening weekend have they not scored in a league fixture in 2019/20.

As excellent as Wolves were before the break, this is still a team with a lot of mileage in those legs and only two league victories under their belts this season. Southampton have been in dire form of late, and continue to leak goals, but have shown some ability to create chances in attack, as evidenced by scoring in every league fixture bar one.
