WSG Tirol Preview – Can hosts regain pre-Covid form?

Enjoying their best period of the campaign in March, before the pandemic put a stop to not only their momentum but football and every day life as we know it, WSG Tirol (10th– W5 D4 L13) have been forced to reset ahead of embarking on the first of twelve Relegation Round encounters. They will begin a point above the sole automatic relegation position, which, as it happens, is occupied by Tuesday’s opponents.

Victory therefore would put some early breathing space between themselves and last place. For that to occur, though, they must do something they have yet to do in 2019/20, which is beat St. Polten. Their two head-to-heads have so far yielded a single point, drawing the home fixture 1-1 before later being on the receiving end of a 5-1 thrashing as the visitors.

Furthermore, two wins from eleven home games (W2 D2 L7) is disconcerting, especially with goals proving so scarce in these fixtures (10 scored/ 25 conceded). As eluded to earlier, though, results before the lockdown were a lot more encouraging when claiming seven of the last nine points against Wolfsberger (2-0), Admira (1-1) and Hartberg (0-3) – this, however, after previously enduring seven consecutive defeats.

St. Polten Preview – Bottom side to come out swinging?

Proving last season’s sixth-place was a one-off, St Polten (12th – W3 D8 L11) would end the 2019/20 regular season at the bottom of the table with the least amount of wins recorded (3) and goals scored (21), and more conceded (54), than any of the twelve teams in this season Austrian’s top flight. Life for them in the Relegation Rounds behind in last place, trailing a clutch of sides by one point.

Having a couple of months to regroup could yet work to their advantage. Back in March, a 0-0 draw on the road at Austria Wien would unknowingly represent their final competitive action. It would also cap off a rather dismal stretch of disappointing results which seen them fail to win any of the last eight league games (D4 L4), since, ironically, a handsome 5-1 victory at home to WSG Tirol last November.

Two of their three victories this season were earned on the road, though, and both by the exact same scoreline: 1-0. Should they come out on top on Tuesday, there are therefore worse bets than another 1-0 correct score. Particularly as anything more exuberant seems improbable, with no team plundering fewer away goals so far than St. Polten’s 9 from 11 such games.

WSG Tirol Vs St. Polten Betting Advice

Not the most glamorous of match-ups it must be said, but a vitally important one all the same for these sides – who would both endure their fair share of struggles during the regular season. Moreover, the head-to-head meetings this season would both deliver on goals, with Both Teams to Score (4/7 Bet365) delivering back-to-back wins for punters. St. Polten will feel their 5-1 home success gives them the edge, however.

WSG Tirol Vs St. Polten Key Facts

  • Two wins and a draw across the last three rounds in the Austrian Bundesliga represented the best run of results of the season for WSG Tirol.
  • Both of St. Polten’s two away wins in the league this season were courtesy of a 1-0 scoreline.
  • This will be a third head-to-head of 2019/20, with St. Polten claiming the better of the results with a 1-1 draw away and 5-1 home victory.

Points were shared when Tirol hosted St. Polten on Matchday 3 in August. Admittedly neither are prolific, however, the fact both leaked goals throughout should lead to no shortage of entertainment once again. Meanwhile all six previous head-to-heads produced three or more goals, with four of those featuring both teams scoring.
