Wycombe Wanderers Preview – Will Wycombe make it a seventh win from eight home games?

Wycombe’s stay in the Championship may have lasted only one season but they are looking to return at the first time of asking. Gareth Ainsworth’s team made history with their promotion to the second tier for the first time and he will be hoping he can repeat that feat this time around. Wanderers are sitting nicely in fourth spot coming into this weekend, just three points behind leaders Wigan.

Ainsworth will be slightly frustrated in that they were joint top last week before losing heavily at home to and improving Ipswich team. It was Wycombe’s first home loss in the league and put an end to their 100% record at Adams Park.

Wycombe suffered another thrashing in the EFL Trophy in midweek, going down 5-0 at home to Burton Albion. It remains to be seen if those heavy losses have any lasting effect but we know this is a resilient group of players. They are low on numbers at the moment, though, and generally work with one of the smaller squads at this level.

Prior to the defeat last weekend, Wanderers had won six straight at home in the league. With only seven points between the top six it looks like being an extremely competitive battle for the automatic promotion places and Wycombe will be looking to bounce back here at the first time of asking.

Portsmouth Preview – Can Pompey secure what would be a rare win on their travels?

Portsmouth are easily one of the biggest clubs in this division but that doesn’t count for much on the park. They have flirted with promotion several times but have work to do if they are to realise their goal of playing Championship football next season. Pompey are in 14th spot and seven points outside of the playoffs.

They are starting to find a bit of consistency, though, as they are now five unbeaten in all competitions with progress in the FA Cup and EFL Trophy secured in the past week.

In terms of their league form it’s two draws and a win in their last three, well-needed having lost three of their previous four. The fact remains it’s just two wins in 13 league games so Danny Cowley will know he has to get his team picking up three points more regularly if they are to move closer to their next opponents in the league.

There’s no doubt this team are capable as shown with a 4-0 demolition of Sunderland at the beginning of last month. Following that up with conceding four in losses against Rotherham and Ipswich are not as comforting, however.

Wycombe Wanderers vs Portsmouth Betting Advice

This is a game where both teams require points for different purposes. Wycombe will not want a third home loss in a row having established such a strong run to begin the season whilst Portsmouth – although improving of late – are still not winning often enough.

Both managers will feel they can lead their respective teams to the Championship but this is a crucial game for the two.

Key Facts – Wycombe Wanderers vs Portsmouth Betting Tip

It’s traditionally a fixture which produces goals. Six of the last nine meetings between the clubs have went over 2.5 goals. All five of Wycombe’s most recent games have done the same whilst eight of Portsmouth’s last 10 matches have also had three or more goals. Back the same to happen here.
