Young Boys – Wagner to make the difference in Berne?

Swiss champions for each of the last four seasons, can Young Boys finally make a positive impression in this their second ever Champions League group stage campaign? Back in 2018, the club from Berne would also begin proceedings on home soil against Manchester United. A resounding 3-0 defeat – one of six from eight meetings versus English sides (W1 D1) – sent them on their way to a bottom place finish.

Under a manager who knows all about the English game, Young Boys will be bullish about their chances on this occasion. Former Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner oversaw only the club’s second successful qualifying campaign for this competition, winning all three home matches whilst scoring three each time. Returning from the recent break in fine fettle with a 4-0 win over FC Zurich on Saturday.

That made it five wins and 18 scored across a six-game unbeaten stretch. The defence of their Swiss Super League title hasn’t been all smooth sailing, though, sitting five points off the team they thrashed last time out having played a game less (W2 D2 L1). And on the topic of defence, clean sheets have been few and far between with just three coming from twelve competitive outings in a season that begun in July.

Manchester United – CR7 can elevate Red Devils in Europe?

Ronaldo fever swept through Old Trafford over the weekend, inspiring the 4-1 victory over Newcastle United that lifted them atop the Premier League table. The Portuguese marked his first start for the club, in his second spell since departing for Spain more than twelve years earlier, with a brace. Clearly determined to make up for lost time, the 36-year-old could prove a very popular goalscorer selection in Berne.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping for a much bigger impact from his former team-mate and last-minute summer signing, though. United didn’t make it beyond the group stage in last season’s tournament, trailing PSG And RB Leipzig in third. This preceded their run to the final of the Europa League, ultimately culminating in bitter disappointment as they lost on penalties to Matchday 2 opponents Villarreal.

United have only won their Champions League group once since 2013/14. They’ll be out to rectify that negative trend this season, beginning with a trip to Switzerland where their record reads W2 L2, with both losses against FC Basel. Confidence in camp should be high, however, following a supremely strong start to the new Premier League season which has seen them collect ten points out of twelve.

Young Boys Vs Manchester United Betting Advice

Unsurprisingly, Manchester United are a short price to get their 2021-22 Champions League adventure underway with three points. It helps, however, that they are facing relatively inexperienced opposition. Reigning Swiss champions Young Boys are set to appear at the group stage for only the second time, though did encounter United on their first outing, losing 3-0 in Berne and 1-0 at Old Trafford in 2018/19.

Young Boys Vs Manchester United – Key Facts:

  • Manchester United will compete in the Champions League group stage for a 24th time, an English club record. Meanwhile, Young Boys have reached this stage for only a second time, last doing so in 2018/19.
  • The clubs would meet in the group the only previous occasion Young Boys made it this far. However, the Swiss side were beaten 3-0 at home and 1-0 in England.
  • Both approach this fixture in confident form, though. Young Boys unbeaten in six (W5) while Man Utd are yet to lose a competitive fixture so far in 2021/22 (W3 D1).

It has been a confident start to the season from both teams which should lead to a positively entertaining encounter inside Wankdorf Stadion. Manchester United are expected to win nonetheless but may be pushed harder than some anticipate. The Red Devils conceded in three of their four games this season and are facing a Young Boys outfit that plays on the front foot, scoring 18 times across the last six matches.
