Molatham can secure Jersey Stakes success

Horse Racing Betting

Race 3 from the Royal Ascot 2020 Festival on Thursday is the Jersey Stakes. This is a Group 3 Class 1 contest which is open only to 3-year-olds.

So this is a good test of the youth on the Ascot turf and there are 15 declared for the contest. The trip is 7f.

Last year’s winner was Space Traveller who scored from a massive 25/1 SP. Only two of the last seven winners of the Jersey Stakes at Ascot have been at an SP of double figures.

King Leonidas to rule at Ascot?

The outright favourite for the Jersey Stakes 2020 is KING LEONIDAS at 3/1* (betting odds taken from 888Sport at 05:00 GMT on Wednesday, 17th June 2020). He definitely looks as if he can carry a threat in this contest.

He scored on his debut over 7f at Newmarket in a novice race. On his return, he scored again at the same venue over a furlong further. That was in a novice stakes contest earlier this month. What made that even more impressive is that he had a 7lb penalty on his back for the day.

There is every chance that MOLATHAM is going to be in the frame. He tried to step up to a mile in his last effort, which was back in October and he came up short with a fourth-place finish.

That was after back to back wins at York and Doncaster at the 7f trip which is his zone. So he will be comfortable back at this trip for Ascot.

His Doncaster win saw him beat out Witchita who went on to take second in the 2000 Guineas. Definite claims there and is currently the 5/1 second-favourite* (betting odds taken from 888Sport at 05:00 GMT on Wednesday, 17th June 2020).

There is an interesting challenge to come in from CELESTIN who had an impressive run at the French 2000 Guineas just over a couple of weeks ago. That was a fourth-place finish there among some very strong company.

He did win in listed company as a 2-year-old and looks to have stacks of potential. He will have cheekpieces for the first time and coming back down in trip, there is a decent chance for him to show well.

Celestin is a current 6/1 option* (betting odds taken from 888Sport at 05:00 GMT on Wednesday, 17th June 2020).

An interesting contender is MONARCH OF EGYPT from 11/2* (betting odds taken from 888Sport at 05:00 GMT on Wednesday, 17th June 2020). The colt is making a big drop in class here and that is what will bring his claims to the table.

He has one previous trip at 7f and that was at Class 1 Group 1 at Newmarket in October last year. He returned from a 244-day break following that for an 8f test at Curragh. He finished at the back of the field in that one, but it was a run under his belt. So it’s down in class and trip for him.

Other Contenders

ROPEY GUEST is still looking to break his maiden and this is going to be a massively tough ask for him to make it happen in this race. But there could be place claims from him. He has placed in each of his last three runs. He returns from a 229 day break. It’s big 33/1 odds to overcome* (betting odds taken from 888Sport at 05:00 GMT on Wednesday, 17th June 2020).

FINAL SONG is another that is coming down in class and could spring a surprise in making a shot at a money finish. She did make a winning debut at Ascot. Just 11 days ago he was out in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and he claimed fourth in that one. She has some potential on her side and will have appeal at 10/1* (betting odds taken from 888Sport at 05:00 GMT on Wednesday, 17th June 2020).

MISTER SNOWDOWN is an unexposed youngster. He scored on his debut at Wolverhampton in March this year. Then he followed that with another victory at Yarmouth earlier this month, beating Enemy by three-quarters of a length. He has shown some potential but is unexposed.

Predictions & Tips

This is a decent fixture and for it, we are going to swing the way of MOLATHAM. His misfire at the Autumn Stakes can be wiped off because it was up in trip and not where he is strongest at.

The quality run that he had at Doncaster to beat Wichita was superbly impressive and he will just get the nod over the equally exciting KING LEONIDAS.

The latter has every chance of scoring in this kind of company. He overcame a huge penalty on his last run to deliver a win, albeit in novice company. He can make a splash and it would be a surprise to not see him in the top three.

There is something about CELESTIN as well after showing well in the French 2000 Guineas. He’s a little bit of an unknown factor but brings some appeal to proceedings.
