Bags Groove 5/1 favourite in Summer Plate Handicap Odds

The current market leader for Summer Plate Handicap betting is BAGS GROOVE at 5/1* (betting odds taken from Betway at 20:05 GMT on Thursday 9th July 2020). He has been away from action for over a year.

This will be the first trip for him since wind surgery. He only had the two runs last year, winning one of those at Kempton.

While Bags Grrove is being respected in this market, it has taken a long time for him to get back into action, which may raise a question mark.

Lough Derg Spirit

There is LOUGH DERG SPIRIT who is is lining up as the current second favourite from 11/2* (betting odds taken from Betway at 20:05 GMT on Thursday 9th July 2020). He is another who is back for the first time since wind surgery.

Lough Derg Spirit will also be out for a new yard having joined Paul Nicholls after last summer. He wasn’t in the greatest of form from his three runs in the last campaign.

It has been over a year since Lough Derg Spirit has been seen as well. But like Bags Groove, he comes into the market highly respected.

San Benedeto can pose a threat

The last run that SAN BENEDETO had was at Ascot last month. He was 14th in a field of 19 in the Ascot Stakes there. He is a smart chaser and that recent effort was at least something that will have sharpened him up.

Not to be dismissed among this kind of company and is a 9/1 contender* (betting odds taken from Betway at 20:05 GMT on Thursday 9th July 2020).

Solomon Grey

Makes a return after four months off the track. He was last seen at Kempton in March and he never got himself shaped very well. He basically did too much too soon in that effort and had nothing left.

But the David Skelton-trained charge is relatively low-mileage which means that punters could still keep him inside. Solomon Grey has won at the course before and is off a decent mark in this one.

Solomon Grey is at 15/2 in Summer Plate Handicap Chase odds* (betting odds taken from Betway at 20:05 GMT on Thursday 9th July 2020).

Adrrastos a proven performer

With four wins in 9 chase efforts in 2019 ADRRASTOS may have appeal for punters as an e/w prospect from 14/1* (betting odds taken from Betway at 20:05 GMT on Thursday 9th July 2020).

The 8 year old did have a flat effort at Ascot recently to get some wind in his lungs. He was sixth of nine in that one, but it was a big effort up at Class 2 that never really suited him.

Doubtful how much he can push on from there, but is likely to be more comfortable back in jumps action.

Other contenders

COPPER WEST did secure a course and distance winner last season. That may give him some claims. He is a bit of an unreliable sort however, but claimed a second place at Ludlow on his last effort in February.

FIDUX will be looking for something on a return to flat action. He had his first flat start for four years when he stopped out at Wolverhampton. Fidux shaped well there before fading. He did very well last summer over the fences.

Predictions & Tips for Summer Plate Handicap Chase Odds

It is a big test to try and figure things out in this one. Horses are coming back from long breaks and efforts on the flat to try and get wind into their lungs.

So there is not really anyone carrying any kind of form. At the head of the market there is BAGS GROOVE and LOUGH DERG SPIRIT who have both been away for over a year, but have highly respected claims. The latter making his debut for Paul Nicholls is very interesting.

But we are going to roll with SAN BENEDETO who ran well in his last chase effort and had a sharpener at Royal Ascot for some added fitness into his claims.
