It’s quality over quantity for this Stakes challenge as there are only 6 declared runners. At the head of the market, the popular English King sits.

This is a 1m 4f trip for the contenders.

Last year’s winner was Nayef Road who scored from a 9/1 SP (S De Sousa / M Johnston)

English King 5/4 in Gordon Stakes Racing Odds

Ed Walker’s ENGLISH KING delivered a win on his return to action. He scored that success in the Lingfield Derby Trial which in turn, sent him to the Epsom Derby as one of the front runners.

However, things didn’t go to plan there for English King who finished in fifth place. That’s no reason to count him out of contention for the Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on Thursday at all.

With Frankie Dettori back in the saddle, he should be in contention. The Derby was just a messy race all in all with the winner Serpentine pulling off a crazy win, but English King was finishing strongly in the contest.

There are still big claims here and if anyone jumps out front like Serpentine did at Epsom, it’s not likely that Dettori will get caught out by the same tactic.

Mogul set for a stronger run?

MOGUL was another that was caught out by what unfolded at the Epsom derby. He just wasn’t prepared or suited to deal with how it all unfolded.

But he comes from a top yard and has Ryan Moore on his back. So more will be expected of Mogul. He delivered brilliantly as a two year old and there still looks to be a lot to come from him.

It’s a matter of when that happens as opposed to if. Mogul, incidentally, was sixth at the Epsom Derby. It’s a fascinating renewal for him not only against English King but Khalifa Sat as well.

Khalifa Sat poses a threat

There will be solid claims arriving from KHALIFA SAT who handled things better at the Epsom Derby than others who he re-opposes here.

It was a second place finish that he took, way behind winner Serpentine however.

But that continued some good form for this versatile horse and the Andrew Balding-trained Khalifa Sat poses a threat here.

If this is a far more straightforward race than Epsom was, it will be interesting to see if he holds off Mogul and English King on a level playing field.

Khalifa Sat is a 6/1 contender* (betting odds taken from Betway at 20:12 GMT on Wednesday 29th July 2020).

Al Aasy seeking a hattrick

It’s all positives from AL AASY as he scored in the Bahrain Trophy last time out. That is back to back wins for him now who has improved with each trip.

That wasn’t the stiffest of opposition that he was up against at the Bahrain Trophy and likely is going to find this level of competition tougher.

He has to deal with a penalty for this one for the recent successes, but Al Aasy has been travelling very well and can make his presence felt in this one.

He is being well respected in the field at 9/2* (betting odds taken from Betway at 20:12 GMT on Wednesday 29th July 2020).

Subjectivist faces a tough time

Even though he won his last race, SUBJECTIVIST could find the going a little too hot for his liking here. His win happened in a Listed race at Hamilton.

But he is facing some of the big Epsom Derby players in this one and is going to have to push his improvement up a few notches to get into contention on Thursday at Glorious Goodwood.

Highland Chief the outsider

HIGHLAND CHIEF made a very good impression on his return to action when he blew off top weight to score at Royal Ascot. That was on a one and a quarter mile trip.

He then found the going at the Derby way too much and among similar company he could struggle to make an impression again.

He has come down in grade but that doesn’t balance out enough for us, the level of competition that he is up against.

Predictions & Tips for Gordon Stakes Racing Odds

What a hot contest this is likely to be at Glorious Goodwood on Thursday. The Derby should have been a really good indicator for this one.

But the pacesetter Serpentine turned that into a weird race. But from what we can pick out of it, ENGLISH KING was going very well at the finish of the Derby and looks reliable enough to trust to get the score here.

There is a lot more to come from MOGUL and he surely has to put the big performance that he has been promoting on the board sooner rather than later. So he should enter the frame.

AL AASY is fascinating here, but under penalty we think that it could be just too much for him. So it is KHALIFA SAT, who has won his two previous trips to Goodwood. It is who we back to fill out the places.
