The Conditional sets the standard for Ascot Silver Cup on Saturday

Horse Racing Betting

There’s a big card at Ascot on Saturday and one of the top feature races is the Silver Cup Handicap Chase (Listed).

This is a 2m 7 1/2f trip for the runners taking part and there are 11 declared for this year’s renewal.

Heading up the mark is THE CONDITIONAL who could be the one to beat on the day after a great effort in the Ladbrokes trophy.

The winner of last year’s renewal was 11 year old REGAL ENCORE from a big 16/1 SP (R P McLernon / A J Honeyball)

The Conditional 3/1 FAV in Ascot Silver Cup Handicap Chase Odds

The market leader for this top contest on Saturday is THE CONDITIONAL at 3/1* (betting odds recorded at 05:14 GMT at Coral on 18th December 2020).

He was the winner of the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival earlier this year.

On his reappearance run for this season The Conditional showed up in the Ladbrokes Trophy and ran an absolute blinder to get third place in that one.

He should be looking for major progress this season now with David Brdigweater who brought him along so well last season.

The Conditional sets the standard in this one.

Coral

Espoir De Guye the big threat to the favourite

Looking the most likely in the Ascot Silver Cup betting to take down the favourite is ESPOIR DE GUYE from 4/1* (betting odds recorded at 05:14 GMT at Coral on 18th December 2020).

He has had a reappearance run under his belt this season. That produced a win for him here at Ascot in a field of nine.

That was at a 21f trip and it came on his first run after his second wind operation. The price that he has paid for that is a rise of 6lb in the ratings.

Is that going to be too prohibitive against The Conditional? That looks to be the big question here.

But he does look to have more potential in him and a bold run can pretty much be assured.

Regal Encore back on familiar turf

REGAL ENCORE will have some appeal in Ascot Silver Cup betting. That is because he likes a trip around Ascot. This will be his 11th run at the venue.

He has scoured in four of those previous ten, along with three place finishes. Regal Encore opened the season with a win in a Grade 3 handicap here on his reappance. So that showed that he still thrives at Ascot.

Regal Encore defied long odds to score this last year, the second time that he has picked up the Silver Cup.

He knows that this is all about and he  in the market* (betting odds recorded at 05:14 GMT at Coral on 18th December 2020).

Quarenta has something to build on

Commanding a bit of respect for the run is QUARENTA who goes up 5lb in the ratings after scoring a win on his repparnace.

That was here at course and distance a month ago. So that should be enough to make opponents sit up and take notice.

That win was scored after an 8 month break and he looked in fine nick throughout the contest, staying on well to get the win after the last.

That was his first run at Ascot and his second from six at distance. Quarenta looks to be strong enough to warrant keeping on the shortlist from 6/1* (betting odds recorded at 05:14 GMT at Coral on 18th December 2020).

Mister Malarky to mount a challenge?

We are not sure what MISTER MALAKRY is going to bring to the table on saturday for trainer Colin Tizzard.

Last winter he scored a Grade 3 at Kempton towards the end of the campaign before pulling up on his final run.

Mister Malarky opened this season with a sub-par effort and then ditched his rider in an unsettled run at the Ladbrokes Trophy.

The cheek pieces are going back on for him here and Mister Malarky is a previous course and distance winner and should stay well enough.

The Rest Of The Runners

The 2019 Ultima winner BEWARE THE BEAR was fifth in the Ladbrokes Trophy on his reappearance run for this campaign.

He is a solid enough chaser and has a course and distance under his belt. He looks to have something to find on current form and gives weight to everyone else.

SUB LIEUTENANT earned a runner up finish on his latest reun, which was the second of the season.

That was at Galway in July and since then he has left Henry De Bromhead. Others look far more appealing.

FAUBURG ROSETGRI has failed to compile any of his last three efforts now. That includes his repaprance for this campaign which was at Haydock after a 10 month lay off.

FLYING ANGEL was fourth on his last run which was a sudden spark of form from nowhere at Aintree. T

hat was a couple of weeks ago. Good performances from him are few and far between, however.

ARDLETHEN has had a couple of efforts this season and he was in Listed action at Carlisle on his return and did well to take fifth.

He put in another solid effort at Newbury following that but lacked any kind of finish.

ENFANT ROI rounds out the preview from the bottom of the weights. He has four wins over the fences now after scoring in October in a French qualifier.

For his new yard following that he took second place back at Auteuil. This is a big jump up in quality of opposition.

Predictions & Tips for Ascot Silver Cup Handicap Odds

Will this boil down to the expected battle between THE CONDITIONAL and ESPOIR DE GUYE? Yes and no really.

That’s because we don’t see the latter getting close enough to pull off the win in the fixture.

The Conditional is our straightforward pick at 3/1* (betting odds recorded at 05:14 GMT at Coral on 18th December 2020).

He looks strong and will be that much better for having had a cracking effort in The Ladbrokes Trophy. The Conditional is easily the pick of the bunch.

We would expect Espoir De Guye to be in the frame. Things get a little bit cloudier in the picture after that.

But our final selection will be REGAL ENCORE who is usually reliable enough at Ascot to get himself in the frame.
