One of the big races of Saturday is the Coral Welsh Grand National Handicap Chase. After the recent trial, it is SECRET REPRIEVE who is dominating the betting at the head of the market.

It is a big field of 18 that has been declared for the running of this Grade 3 fixture at Chepstow.

The test is a marathon one at 3m 6f for which many, this will be the first time attacking that kind of trip.

Secret Reprieve the 4/1 FAV in Welsh Grand National Handicap Chase betting

Collecting the win here in the Welsh Grand National Trial last month certainly boosted the claims of SECRET REPRIEVE.

Secret Reprieve has big credentials after taking that win and for trainer Evan Williams, and he looks primed for this epic test. While he hasn’t been on this trip before, Secret Reprieve had plenty in hand in scoring in the trial.

Yala Enki could show well again

So it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that he stays on the trip again very well. One concern will be a fall at Aintree on his last effort in the Becher.

But if all is fine from that early fall, there’s plenty on offer from him.

After a second-place to Secret Reprieve in the Trial here at Chepstow 35 days ago, THE TWO AMIGOS should be back in the frame.

He had opened the season well with a good third-place finish and then went better for that Welsh National Trial.

Can the unexposed Springfield Fox show?

Although he has not had the experience over the fences that a lot of this field has, SPRINGFIELD FOX has some appeal in this fixture.

After winning his first two chases last winter, he lost his rider in the National Hunt Chase at the back end of last year on a go over the fences.

He was over the hurdles for his reappearance run this season when he took a very good second place at 3m.

That was here at Chepstow and he has a lot to like about him.

More expected of Truckers Lodge

The reappearance run for TRUCKERS LODGE didn’t go to plan as he lost his rider in a Kelso Chase last October.

So it’s a slightly longer break that he is coming back from than most of the field is.

He did score a couple of chase wins last season though and won’t mind the heavy stuff too much.

Christmas In April can show well at Chepstow

Colin Tizzard’s CHRISTMAS IN APRIL had a good reappearance run, taking second place to Cloudy Glen in the Southern Nationals.

That was at Fontwell over 3m 4f last November and he is one of the ones in the field that would expect to handle the trip well enough.

The conditions are to his favour as well, going towards the heavy side of things.

Others to note

DOMINATEUR had a credible reappearance run, finishing last in a field of only three at Sandown on a 3m trip last year. He has scored at Chepstow before and while he had a below par run at the Midlands National at the end of the previous campaign, he’s a capable sort.

PRIME VENTURE has some solid claims for Evan Williams. He was fourth in this last year from 4lb lower. On his reappearance run Prime Venture got his first chase score, that coming in a Sedgefield novice handicap. He can make his mark.

Another that is very capable of the normal fences is VIEUX LION ROUGE. He did get a score his last winter and the 12 year old would perhaps offer place claims. He comes in hot after winning the Becher at Aintree last time out.

On a big day of racing, this is one of the major highlights as the 18 declared runners take on the gruelling ground in a marathon test.

He was powerful in securing that Trial and while the extra distance is going to be a question mark over him, he looks a huge threat in this field. He was staying on very well to score that Trial win.

The other selection for the big race is YALA ENKI. We can’t ignore the fact that he’s handled himself so well in this race before with a couple of places in the last two editions.
