Spanish Mission to set the standard in Doncaster Cup Stakes

Horse Racing Betting

Race 5 from Doncaster on Friday is the Doncaster Cup Stakes, a Group 2 Class 1 fixture. There is a great field turning out for this one and there are 7 declared.

It is a 2m 2f trip that the runners will be taking on in the fixture, which is open to 3 year olds and above. It is SPANISH MISSION who is heading up the betting market for the run.

First across the line last year in the 2019 renewal was the impressive STRADIVARIUS from a 1/9 SP (L Dettori / J H M Gosden).

Spanish Mission the 7/5 FAV for Doncaster Cup Stakes Odds

Heading into this big race on Friday as the favourite in the current betting landscape is SPANISH MISSION at 7/4* (betting odds taken from Coral at 23:48 GMT on Thursday, 10th September 2020).

He picked up a win on his last effort, making the most of perfect conditions to score in a Listed race at Chester.

That was his first run for new trainer Andrew Balding as well and so he’s off to a bright start. Spanish Mission had Selino behind him in that one.

Earlier this season he did earn a runners up place in a 2m trip at Sandown in a Group 3 contest, which was arguably the best performance from him this season.

He is very close to setting the standard in this one, and warrants respect.

SELINO
11/1

Unibet

Can Selino turn the tables of Spanish Mission

Even though he is at a long 11/1 quote, there is some appeal in SELINO for this trip* (betting odds taken from Coral at 23:48 GMT on Thursday, 10th September 2020).

He was no match whatsoever for Spanish Mission at Chester three weeks ago over the extended 1m 6f trip that that was.

But he looks very readily suited to this longer effort and if there is more of a decent gallop to come, then he is probably going to be a player in this one.

This will be the first outing for Selino on such a track and it could all lean towards his strengths.

It has been two runners-up efforts for him in three efforts this season and he looked good in both of them. It’s all about the conditions for Selino.

Revolver to defend unbeaten record?

It has been six handicap wins for REVOLVER and he is easily one of the top horses of the year.

The three-year-old is highly progressive and looked comfortable in a longer 17f trip at Pontefract last time out.

It’s been such impressive stuff for Sir Mark Prescott’s runner, that it is going to be fascinating to see if he can get himself in the frame.

This is a big jump up in terms of quality that he is facing. But he’s a gutsy, bold runner and not to be totally discounted from an 11/2 quote* (betting odds taken from Coral at 23:48 GMT on Thursday, 10th September 2020).

Red Verdon to enjoy another run at Doncaster?

RED VERDON is a horse that seems to enjoy himself at Doncaster and with Frankie Dettori booked, makes for an interesting inclusion.

He was under a penalty last time out and still performed very well to take fourth at Deauville.

Red Verdon has won his two previous traces, the most recent of which was a Group 3 13.9f trip at Longchamp.

He is again under a penalty here, but Red Verdon has won two of four previous trips to Doncaster, landing one place finish on top of that as well.

He’s one to watch in the market at 13/2* (betting odds taken from Coral at 23:48 GMT on Thursday, 10th September 2020).

The rest of the runners

EAGLES BY DAY scored a one and three-quarter mile Group 3 success at York recently on his first run for David O’Meara.

He then took on a couple of trough races at the Goodwood Cup and the Lonsdale Cup and knocked on the door of place finishes in those.

He wasn’t really expected to get close to the win in either, but it was respective runs.

This is one of the easier runs that Eagles By Day has had for a while and is at 5/1* (betting odds taken from Coral at 23:48 GMT on Thursday, 10th September 2020)

ISLAND BRAVE probably has a little too much to find. He actually won in August in a handicap fixture at Ascot over a 2m distance. He battled bravely at the Ebor at York following that, but was never any kind of threat.

Island Brave may find the going a little tough here under a stronger gallop and is a big 33/1 outsider* (betting odds taken from Coral at 23:48 GMT on Thursday, 10th September 2020).

THE GRAND VISIR is a pretty handy stayer. On his last run, his second since a return to action, he went off at top weight and put in a bold run for a fourth place finish.

His opener for this season was in the Queen Alexandria at Royal Ascot where he took second place. He comes in as an 11/1 option* (betting odds taken from Coral at 23:48 GMT on Thursday, 10th September 2020).

Predictions & Tips for Doncaster Cup Stakes Racing Odds

To be fair, while this looks like an exciting grace, it is not the strongest of renewals. Because of that we can go straight to the top and really consider the chance of SPANISH MISSION at 7/4 in this one* (betting odds taken from Coral at 23:48 GMT on Thursday, 10th September 2020).

Things fell into place for him in a Listed race at Chester to score last time out and that positive start for his new yard can be built on.

REVOLVER is just a fascinating entry as he comes up quite a bit in facing some better company. Will he have enough to take his winning streak to seven on the spin?

The other that we would have to pick out of this field is the big 11/1 shot SELINO* (betting odds taken from Coral at 23:48 GMT on Thursday, 10th September 2020).

Although he was comprehensively beaten by Spanish Mission recently, the conditions are likely to pay more into his favour.
