Vinndication the one to beat in Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby?

Horse Racing Betting

Race 6 features the Charlie Hall Chase action at Wetherby on Saturday. This is one of the big races of the day from the venue.

The Charlie Hall Chase is a Grade 2 contest which is open to 5 year olds and above it’s a 3m trip for this involved.

We have 10 declared runners for this year’s renewal and heading the market narrowly is VINNDICATION over the equally exciting CYRNAME.

The winner of last year’s Charlie Hall was BALLYOPTIC from an 11/4 SP (Sam Twiston-Davies / N A Twiston-Davies)

Vinndication the 5/2 FAV for Charlie Hall Chase Odds

Big things are expected of VINNDICATION at Wetherby on the weekend. He returned after a long break, during which he had wind surgery, to score at Ascot in November last year.

That was at the Grade 3 Sodexo Gold Cup Handicap Chase.

Following another break, albeit a shorter one of about four months, he visited the Cheltenham Festival this year.

He took on the Grade 3 Ultima in that one and took a very credible fourth place finish from a field of 23.

After winning his first two races in the chasing sphere (novices) Vinndication looks to be really coming on a strong force now.

He is a 5/2 favourite for this 3m contest* (betting odds taken from Coral at 22:33 GMT on Friday, 30th October 2020).

This is a big step in his career, especially if he wins. He could be a strong player in next year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup. With Vindication having performed well refreshed, there are big claims here.

Can Cyrname rediscover his best?

Of course, we have to have a look at Paul Nicholls’ CYRNAME as a contender. He made all the headlines on his seasonal reappearance run last year. That was when he ended the brilliant unbeaten streak of Altior.

So that propelled CYRNAME to big heights. Following that beating of Altior at Ascot last November, he couldn’t follow up when taking his place in the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day.

Like the rest of the field, he was destroyed by Clan Des Obeaux on the day, but Cyrname was the best of the rest in second place, but 21 lengths behind the winner.

There was a huge disappointment for him on his final run of last season. He went to the Betfair Ascot Chase (Grade 1) and was huge disappointingly as the long odds-on favourite. Cyrname fell in the contest.

He is a classy chaser, he’s proven that. But he really needs a bounce-back performance here after his long absence.

From a quote of 2/1 Cyrname is not to be dismissed lightly what is a hot contest* (betting odds taken from Coral at 22:33 GMT on Friday, 30th October 2020).

Ballyoptic back for a defence in the Charlie Hall Chase

Last year’s winner BALLYOPTIC is back for another crack this year. He has to be respected for the contest. This will be his first run since February when he scored a good success over a 3m trip at Ascot.

The experienced 10 year old got that victory in a valuable Listed contest and romped home by more than 8 lengths.

That was a great return to form from him as well. He had looked to be faltering following his success in this race last year, not making an impression in his following two runs.

Heading into last year’s Charlie Hall Chase, Ballyoptic had arrived on the back of a win at Chepstow. Albeit after a long break, that is the same scenario in which he reappears here.

He likely to give a good account of himself once again and is a 15/2 quote* (betting odds taken from Coral at 22:33 GMT on Friday, 30th October 2020).

Can Sam Spinner find improved jumping form?

We do see a chance for SAM SPINNER in this one. It is, however, an occasion in which he really needs to prove himself. His jumping ability has been called into question more than once over the big stuff.

He is a good hurdler without question and started to make headway in the chasing sphere last winter. He won all three chase fixtures (novices) that he entered, culminating in a victory at Doncaster in the middle of December.

Sam Spinner hasn’t been seen since then, which could be a little concern about him from 5/1* (betting odds taken from Coral at 22:33 GMT on Friday, 30th October 2020).

If his jumping form hasn’t taken a sizable step forward coming back refreshed, we don’t see more than place claims coming into this one for him.

Definitely Red looks for second Charlie Hall success

The 2018 winner DEFINITELY RED comes back for more. His presence is interesting as well and the 11 year old needs some respect.

He was in good shape earlier this year. His form was on the up and scored a win at Kelso on his last effort.

That was at the end of February, so he Definitely Red has been away for 245 days since then. That victory at Kelso was in a Listed Chase fixture into which he had gone as the even-money favourite.

His form at the end of last season did see him in good heart and he had lost none of his ability. He throws off the cheekpieces after that last effort.

Definitely Red is a 12/1 contender in the field* (betting odds taken from Coral at 22:33 GMT on Friday, 30th October 2020).

The rest of the runners

AYE RIGHT comes back to a 3m trip with a hint of promise. He was up against Sam Spinner in December and was challenging well before taking a tumble.

In his last race he was at Kelso at 2m in which he finished in second place. That was a race that really didn’t do anything for him, but it was competitive wind in his lungs last month.

KEEPER HILL makes his return and is more used to being a player in smaller fields than this. He looks a talented horse.

But his career in this sphere has highlighted a few weaknesses. It’s unlikely that he will have the jumping prowess to score.

MISTER WHITTAKER is a good chaser. He’s not totally without place claims here. The one factor though will be his last two trips at this distance.

Mister Whittaker disappointed in both of them. But he showed his ability with a third place in the Plate at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

SAINT XAVIER pulled up on his reappearance run. Back in June he went poor in a Grade 3 effort and has changed hands again since. He is now with Ricahrd Hobson and this looks too big of an ask.

LA BAGUE AU ROI took a fourth place finish on her last run. That was at Perth and she was going well there until she made an error at the final jump. But she should have been right in the farme on the 3m trip had she cleared it. She has had wind surgery since.

Predictions & Tips for Charlie Hall Chase Racing Odds

Another of Saturday’s fantastic races. We see a lot of serious claims coming in. We will start with CYRNAME. How likely are we to see him return to his very best?

That’s a big question on the mind.

We just can’t get there with him, certainly not with him giving 13lbs to the other key players in this contest. He hasn’t won anything over 2m 5f before so that wiped him out of the equation for us.

So that really lives the challenge of likely future Cheltenham Gold Cup participant VINNIDCATION as the one to beat from 5/2* (betting odds taken from Coral at 22:33 GMT on Friday, 30th October 2020).

This is really where he is now expected to kick on to much bigger things and he has to simply be in the frame.

We are going with an each option of 12/1 on DEFINITELY RED for our final name for the shortlist* (betting odds taken from Coral at 22:33 GMT on Friday, 30th October 2020).

He showed his ability earlier this year and so he looks as if he still has a decent trip in him.
