Festival favourite Battaash with unfinished business

Heading into the 2020 Royal Ascot Festival, Battaash has been well supported. He is going as the 5/6 current favourite for the King’s Stand Stakes* (betting odds taken from Unibet at 18:46 GMT on Monday, June 15th 2020). He could take some beating as well because he looks to be head and shoulders above this field.

Trained by Charlie Hills, Battaash has actually never managed to win at Ascot before, seemingly getting too excited and unfocused when the big occasions roll around. With no crowd in attendance that should help him stay settled.

This is about unfinished business for Battash. In his two attempts at the King’s Stand he has taken the runner-up spot. But he is coming in fresh as well for this one and he looks primed to go and break that Ascot duck.

The 6 year old was last seen at Paris Longchamp at the Prix De L’Abbaye De Longchamp when he finished at the back of the field, missing out on what would have been a hattrick.

That was a blip, a big one but this is a monster of a horse and he has won each of the last three times he has come back after at least a 230 day break.

GLASS SLIPPERS

GLASS SLIPPERS stunned the field at the Prix de L’Abbaye in October last year, with Battaash third from last. The 4 year old filly is more than capable in this one and she signed off in 2019 with a hattrick of wins, including that Prix de L’Abbaye score.

She did take some time to get up to speed on the previous occasion where she had a break of at least 200 days. But she got better and better and finished the year with that bang. Can she come out flying and lay down any kind of challenge to Battaash as the 9/2 second-favourite* (betting odds taken from Unibet at 18:46 GMT on Monday, June 15th 2020)?

LIBERTY BEACH

This would be some story if 3 year old filly LIBERTY BEACH was to come up with the win. She’s an extremely good young horse however, having won five of seven racetrack appearances. She has had the advantage of a recent run to sharpen her up as well.

Liberty Beach was last seen on June 7th winning at Haydock in a 6f contest in a field of 13. That’s three wins in her last four runs.

This is some big company for her however and would need something super special to take out the favourite, but definite place claims. Liberty Beach is currently at 7/1 in the market* (betting odds taken from Unibet at 18:46 GMT on Monday, June 15th 2020).

EQUILATERAL

The last time that EQUILATERAL was seen was at Meydan in February where he claimed second place. That was after winning at the track in late January over Waady who in turn beat him when they renewed their little rivalry.

He scored that success in his first effort after being gelded. He will enjoy the flat trip but his Ascot record doesn’t make for wonderful reading.

Equilateral was 7th of 12 in last year’s King’s Stand finding the going way too tough, and that was after 12th of 22 in 2018’s Commonwealth Cup. He has to find some, but his Meydan form was promising.

Other contenders

Unless Battaash beats himself, then we are generally looking for options to place here. ROCKET ACTION has won his last two efforts and he looks to be a very good progressive sprinter. He’s only failed to score in one of his last three. This is a step up for him.

KURIOUS signed off last year with back to back wins on the board. She has been lightly raced before but hasn’t been up against anything of the kind of quality that she is going to be facing in this one.

Predictions & Tips

It has to be BATTAASH all the way. With Blue Point, the winner of the last two renewals now out of the way, this is the moment where Battaash can shine, especially under quieter conditions.

If he gets into his stride and is calm, it is hard to see anyone getting near him. He should be eating this kind of company for breakfast and he gets the nod all the way.

So in the W/O Battash market we are going to lean on GLASS SLIPPERS to get the business done. She’s a great filly and finished 2019 with some cracking form behind her.
