The July Cup Stakes is the big race of the day from Newmarket. This is Race 7 on the card and it is part of the British Champions Series, a Group 1 Class 1 contest.

This should be a really warm contest as well which is open to 3 year olds and above. The July Cup Stakes is over a 6f trip.

There are 13 declared for the contest on likely soft going. Last year’s renewal winner was 3 year old Ten Sovereigns who was ridden to success by Ryan Moore at a 9/2 SP.

Golden Horde is the current 2/1 FAV in July Cup Stakes odds

Commonwealth Cup winner GOLDEN HORDE is being well respected in July Cup Stakes odds at 2/1* (betting odds taken from Coral at 23:43 GMT on Friday July 10th 2020).

One thing that is on his side is that the last three winners of the July Cup Stakes have been 3 year olds, like Golden Horde.

There is just no easy route to a win here so he will have to pull out something special. But that Commonwealth Cup success was so good.

Golden Horde beat Kimari by one and a half lengths at Royal Ascot. He has scored three wins from seven trips (all at this distance) and brings some massive claims in this one.

With three wins in his last six runs he should be in the mix.

Can Sceptical shake off upset?

Franke Dettori will be on the back of SCEPTICAL who is a high-class performer. The 4 year old is a special sprinter, not bad for an unraced three year old anyway.

But he missed out on a five-timer when he appeared at Royal Ascot in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Group 1).

Sceptical actually appeared to run out of steam there in a third place finish behind winner Hello Youmzain who he opposes again in this one.

Soft conditions could throw a spanner in the works of his search for a first Group 1 win.

Royal Ascot winner Hello Youmzain needs respect

It was a really gutsy 6f effort from HELLO YOUMZAIN at Royal Ascot. It was a really stiff contest in the Diamond Jubilee but he did manage to dig it out in the end.

That was his second success at the highest level after winning the Haydock Sprint Cup last season as well.

The guts that he showed to fight for that Royal Ascot win means that he has to be kept on side as a 9/2 prospect in July Cup Stakes odds* (betting odds taken from Coral at 23:43 GMT on Friday July 10th 2020).

Can Equilateral push on further?

A big each way option from 25/1 is EQUILATERAL* (betting odds taken from Coral at 23:43 GMT on Friday July 10th 2020). Why?

Well he showed up the King’s Stand and put in a blistering effort there to take second place. He only found his brilliant stablemate Battaash to god in that one.

He is coming back down in trip here to 6f and the talented 5 year old could have something to offer in this one. Equilateral scored on a 5f effort at Meydan earlier this year and that King’s Stand effort was on a reappearance.

Equilateral has never quite settled at 6f but he shouldn’t far from the frame even in this warm contest.

Oxted heading in the right direction

OXTED is sitting on a potential hattrick with this run. On his most recent effort on a return to action, he scored in a 6f contest at Newmarket. That was in the Group 3 Abernant Stakes when he was travelling well and confirmed progress.

Others to note

NAMOS has won his last two runs, those being Group 3 efforts in Germany. This is a fairly big step up in class for him here and would need a career best to get in the picture.

BRANDO took a second place finish at Newcastle on his last trip. The 8 year old at least looked as if he can still mix things up, but now coming all the way back up to the top level, he may struggle.

Predictions & Tips for Darley July Cup Stakes Odds

Franke Dettori on SCEPTICAL will have plenty of appeal for punters. He is such a good sprinter, but we do have to take a pass on him for this one. We expect GOLDEN HORDE to get close.

The fact that HELLO YOUMZAIN has scored twice at the highest level while the former is still waiting to break though, speaks volumes for us and we lean towards him.

We like EQUILATERAL as a big each way option to come up with enough to get into the places.
