Magical sets the high-class standard in 2020 Champions Stakes at Ascot

Horse Racing Betting

This is the big one of the British Champions Day on Saturday at Ascot. This is the Group 1 Ascot Champion Stakes, the highlight of the day.

MAGICAL has been well supported at the head of the market for the fixture, and she is one 11 declared runners for Saturday’s contest.

The race is open to 3 year olds and above and is over a 1m 2f trip.

The experience here is with the current favourite after landing the 2019 renewal of the fixture for Aidan O’Brien. Will she land it again?

Magical the 7/4 FAV in Ascot Champion Stakes Odds

The brilliant MAGICAL could be the one to beat on Saturday in the Ascot Champion Stakes.

She is the current 7/4 favourite for the race in horse racing betting* (betting odds taken from Paddy Power at 23:29 GMT on Friday, 17th October 2020).

Last year she scored three times at Group 1. She is already up to that tally for the new campaign in just four races.

She is just, once again, in tip-top shape and in many ways sets the standard for this race.

In her last race, Magical took on the exciting Ghaiyyath in the Irish Champion Stakes and came out on top.

That was a fantastic effort from her, and another bold bid to defend her Champions Stakes crown is fully expected.

Magical is something special and if she doesn’t deliver on Saturday, then it will probably have taken something extremely special to beat her.

Can Mishriff get the better of the favourite?

There should be bold claims on the table from MISHRIFF. He secured a hattrick with the score at the Prix Guillaume d’Ornano at Deauville a couple of months ago.

That’s three wins from four runs this season and can’t be dismissed.

That win in France was in some very testing conditions as well, so the ground isn’t going to bother him on Saturday.

He gets a weight-for-age allowance for this run as well.

There is a big chance that he is going to be pushing for a place finish.

Mishriff is the current 7/2 second favourite in horse racing betting* (betting odds taken from Paddy Power at 23:29 GMT on Friday, 17th October 2020).

Addeybb looks a threat

In last year’s renewal of the Champion Stakes, ADDEYBB found only MAGICAL too good on the day.

The difference this year is that the ground is going to be more in his favour. Addeybb seems to relish things on the heavier side so he should pose a threat.

It has been three wins in four races from this high-class gelding this season. Earlier this year he was racing in Australia and collected a couple of top level wins.

On his last run he scored at Ayr, having come down in grade.

From 9/1 he has plenty of appeal to challenge* (betting odds taken from Paddy Power at 23:29 GMT on Friday, 17th October 2020).

Lord North to make his presence felt?

Of course in a race like this, the claims are going to be deep. LORD NORTH has the quality and form in his to make his presence felt.

He won his first two runs on appearance this season, the best of those coming at the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

He was last seen at the Juddmonte, taking a third place finish there in the Group 1 contest.

The most notable take away from the win that he took on his last trip to Ascot, was how well he quickened up for the finish.

Pyledriver to push for a place?

It has been a fantastic season for PYLEDRIVER as well. It has been two wins from five efforts in this campaign.

One of those was in the Royal meeting here when he claimed the King Edward VII in impressive style. Pyledriver followed that up with a success in the Great Voltigeur.

He comes down in trip for this one after taking a third palace finish at the St leger.

He is another with some solid claims in what is a very complicated field to pick through for the Champion Stakes odds.

The rest of the runners

The lightly raced SERPENTINE took a win at the Derby, getting the better of Pyledriver in that contest. He missed out on a hat-trick on his last effort, a disappointing trip in Paris last month.

French challenge SKALLETI brings some claims. He made it a double for current form when he impulsively scored the win at the Prix Dollar at Longchamp.

There are some very interesting claims here from him, but will likely need a career best.

SAN DONATO struggled over this trip at Ayr on his last effort, hanging on to take third. He was behind Addeybb in that contest.

It has actually been a good season from him, but looks to be a little short in such a warm contest.

The popular JAPAN just hasn’t been at his best this season. When he rattled the crossbar in the Arc last year, bigger things were expected from him in this campaign. It hasn’t happened.

DESERT ENCOUNTER has some smart form as he has been in the frame in each of his last five races.

The wins are excluding him however. Last season he signed off with a Group 1 success, however. Consistency is not a problem, lack of a winning touch at this level is.

Predictions & Tips for Ascot Champion Stakes Racing Odds

What a field. What a race and this is rightly going to be the highlight of a big day of racing. We have to stick with the favourite MAGICAL who is, aptly, such a magical mare.

She is as good as ever, if not better and her three wins puts her right in the frame here. She easily sets the standard and with proof of current form in beating Ghaiyyath last month, has to be the main pick.

Also going on the shortlist for this contest is MISHRIFF who just looks as if he is heading for some very big things.

A couple of months ago he got a very impressive victory in France to secure a composed hattrick. He should be a player.

The final selection for the shortlist is ADDEYBB. With some Group 1 scores behind him in this campaign, and a good workout at Ayr recently under his belt.

There is a clear threat to come from him.
