There is a clear and obvious favourite for this race and that is SOLDIER OF LOVE at 8/11* (betting odds taken from Coral at 20:57 GMT on Wednesday, 4th August 2020).

There’s a fair reason for that as well.

Since coming back to action after a wind operation, he has been on his game big time for trainer Paul Nicholls. On his return to action he scored a 3m novice effort at Bangor.

Then on a Newton Abbot course and distance effort on his last race, he breezed to a win.  So there are the claims as he sits on a hattrick.

Solider Of Love retains the cheek piece and tongue tie. There’s every chance that he is going to push on even further.

Bally Longford the one to watch beyond the favourite?

BALLY LONGFORD comes back after a 143 day absence. He finished off his last campaign with a good third place in March.

Last summer Bally Longford won a couple of times at the 3m mark.

So if he is anywhere near that kind of form for trainer Colin Tizzard, then he could be one to consider in this field.

He certainly on paper looks to be the one most capable of taking on the favourite.

Marble Moon to put on a smooth performance?

Three times last season MARBLE MOON collected a 3m chase win. So he is likely to be a contender in this one.

He has had a reappearance under his belt this season well, which happened at Southwell.

That was a month and a half ago and he shaped fairly well in that over the hurdles, promising more to come.

Marble Moon seems to be progressing nicely enough over the fences and place claims there for this contest.

For Good Measure drops in form

Training as the current second favourite in this Handicap Chase for Newton Abbot Racing odds is FOR GOOD MEASURE. He returned to action after the winter at Wincanton a month ago.

There was little on offer from him there, taking 9th in the field. But it was a workout at least.

It was a long way from the form that he showed in landing his first chase success at Warwick in October, over a 3m trip.

Lord Bryan an unpredictable entry

LORD BRYAN has scored at Newton Abbot before, but in the form of his recent showing, he looks as if he needs a little more action to get up to speed.

He battled well to a second place finish at Taunton in February, but on his reappearance a month ago at this venue, he looked very poor.

So it’s a question of which Lord Bryan shows up basically.

Viens Chercher with too much to find?

Quite how VIENS CHERCER is going to come up with a challenge in this one, is a bit of a mystery. He has pulled up on each of his last three runs now, grinding on his reappearance. THat was at Southwell just three weeks ago and looks to have completely lost his way.

We can only see the one winner in this one and that is, excitingly, the favourite SOLDIER OF LOVE.

He returned to action bang in form and he is eyeing up a hat-trick now. We wouldn’t go against him getting it, not in this field.

As for a main challenger to the favourite, that will have to be Bally Longford on his return.
