Halep to lap it up in Cinci

It’s a quick turn around for some players coming off the back of the Olympics as the WTA Cincinnati tournament swings into action next week. There is a big field out for the Premier event which includes Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber and the number one spot in the world is up for grabs in this one. Williams will hold on to the the crown if she gets to the quarter finals, but if she loses out before then and Kerber wins in Cincinnati, then the German will be the new World Number one.

So big stuff at stake here, but you wonder how much the Olympic excursion will have taken out the pair of them. Serena Williams went out of the competition early of course so will have had more time to get herself together for WTA Cincinnati, whereas Kerber had a run to the final where she claimed the silver medal against Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig. So that was a lot of extra work put in by Kerber and that will probably attract punters from here this week and she goes into the tournament as 8/1 third favourite.

After this there is the Connecticut Open before the US Open start in New York at the end of the month. So this is an important form tournament and Williams goes into the event as reigning champions having won it in the last two years. With her early departure from Rio, where she never looked comfortable at all as she was dumped out by Elina Svitolina, Williams may have a little advantage. But she looked a distraught figure in that defeat, almost breaking down in tears because it was so tough. She is 6/4 favourite for WTA CIncinnati, but you may question her mentally in this one.

So that all brings us to Simona Halep who is a 5/1 poke to take the crown here. Halep skipped the Olympics because of fears over the Zika virus so she has had plenty of time to prep for this one. She recently claimed the Rogers Cup in Canada which means that she is bang in form at the moment and she made the final here last year, losing out to Williams. She is on a great stretch of form with 23 wins in her last 26 matches played and is on a 10-match winning streak. You can’t argue with that, but out of her, Williams and Kerber, she gets the tougher draw as Agnieszka Radwanska and Belinda Bencic could be knocking around in her quarter.

Kerber and Halep are in the opposite half of the draw to Williams, and up in the top half to really oppose Williams you have Garbine Muguruza and Dominika Cibulkova. Of the two, you would have to side with the little powerhouse Cibulkova who can string together a nice stretch and challenge. Britain’s Johanna Konta is in the mix as well and could clash with Halep in the quarter final stage of the competition.

Top seeds in the top half: Serena Williams, Garbiñe Muguruza, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Dominika Cibulkova.

Top seeds in the bottom half: Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep, Agnieszka Radwanska, and Roberta Vinci.

The fact that Williams has taken a wildcard into this one says a lot about here. She is clearly keen to get over the shock of her Olympic loss and is ready to defend her world number one status. However, the value isn’t with the defending champion here, it all lies with Simona Halep who is running in some cracking form at the moment.
