2000 Guineas Race Details

The 2000 Guineas was first run in 1809 and has such a wonderful, rich history.

The race was introduced by the Jockey Club and it came after the introduction of the Derby at Epsom.

The 2000 Guineas rapidly grew in status and became one of the top races in Britain for 3-year-old thoroughbreds.

It’s a popular race of course, with its main trials being the Craven Stakes and the Greenham Stakes. The race also serves as a Derby trial and it’s open to colts and fillies (geldings excluded).

  • Group 1
  • 3-year-olds
  • Rowley Mile, Newmarket
  • 1m Turf
  • 9st 0lb (3lb allowance for fillies)
  • Going: Good To Soft

Native Trail FAV in 2000 Guineas Racing Odds 2022

The current favourite in the 2000 Guineas betting ante-post is NATIVE TRAIL at Even Money* (odds recorded at 19:49 GMT on April 26th, 2022 at 888Sport).

It has been five runs and five wins by the Godolphin star and he clearly warrants respect.

The latest of his wins came recently in mid-April.

Native Trail breezed his way to victory in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket, winning by more than three lengths.

He goes for trainer Charlie Appleby who hasn’t won this race before.

Native Trail was highly impressive as a 2-year-old, claiming wins in The National Stakes and The Dewhurst.

Victory on his reappearance at the Craven at this venue, puts him right in the thick of 2000 Guineas betting.

2000 Guineas Betting Contenders

Along with the obvious main contender in 2000 Guineas betting, Native Trail, there are plenty of others arriving in the contest with big hopes.

Native Trail does tend to be a little slow to get up to speed, so anyone that takes him on early could have a chance.

Traffic in the contest is also another variable which could see the odds get upset.

COROEBUS is a good-looking prospect and has been rapidly progressing and he is a stablemate to Native Trail.

He does look to have a wide range of options ahead of him in terms of disciplines.

Wins in the Juddmonte and the Group 3 Autumn Stake last term saw Coroebus produce fantastic turns of speed that suggested he could be a top 1 miler.

LUXEMBOURG does look one of the more likely in the field to potentially upset the Godolphin duo mentioned above.

He won the Vertex Futurity Trophy at Doncaster on his final run of last season, which is generally a good key piece of form ahead of the 2000 Guineas.

Form from key races:

  • Dewhurst Stakes – Native Trail, Newmarket, October 9th, 2021
  • Futurity Trophy – Luxembourg, Doncaster, October 21st 2021
  • Greenham Stakes – Perfect Power, Newmarket, April 16th, 2022
  • Craven Stakes – Native Trail, Newmarket, April 13th, 2022

PERFECT POWER is another that may well pique some interest in 2000 Guineas betting.

He banked consecutive Group 1 wins at Deauville and Newmarket at the end of last season and a good reappearance in the Greenham sets him up well if he can prove stamina.

Among the others who could be potential key contenders in the field is ROYAL PATRONAGE who beat Coroebus in the Royal Lodge at course and distance last year.

That completed a hattrick by him.

POINT LONSDALE is another who could impress and the move to the 1m trip doesn’t look like an issue for him.

He won his first four runs last season, kindling a Group Two before his winning streak was ended by Native Trail in the National Stakes.

2000 Guineas Trends

As the Two Thousand Guineas betting 2022 looks at only 3-year-olds it means that there is no previous form in the race to look back on.

It’s a one-shot deal for runners in the 2000 Guineas. But there are trends for the Classic.

There have been four favourites that have delivered the odds in the 2000 Guineas betting from the last ten editions, which is a pretty decent return.

It has been 5 in the last 12.

The key races to pull form from ahead of 2000 Guineas is the Futurity Trophy at Doncaster, the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket and the Greenham Stakes at Newbury.

The longest priced winner in the last 10 editions of the 2000 Guineas was the 40/1 gamble scored by Night Of Thunder in 2014.

Only three of the last ten winners of the famous classic have been at longer odds than 10/1.

2000 Guineas Trends

  • 5 of the last 12 winners were the race Favourite
  • 10 of the last 12 winners had scored a victory last time out
  • Four of the last 12 2000 Guineas winners had won the Futurity Trophy LTO
  • half of the last dozen winners had at least 1 run at Newmarket of more than 1m
  • 5 of the last 12 winners had scored before at Newmarket at more than 1m
  • A rating of at least 109 was held by 11 of the last 12 winners
  • All but one of the last dozen winners had won a Group race before
  • Just 3 of the last dozen winners had previously won that season

Of the last dozen winners of the 2000 Guineas, seven of them had come from the top three in the betting market.

The longest-priced winner of the 2000 Guineas ever was 66/1 shot Rockavon in 1961. The record time is held by Kameko who scored a win in 1.34.72 in 2020.

The leading trainer of the 2000 Guineas is Aidan O’Brien who is pretty much the master hand at this Newmarket Classic.

He has won it 10 times before, including three times in a row from 2017 through 2019.

The most recent success in the 2000 Guineas for O’Brien was in 2019 with Magna Grecia.

2000 Guineas and the Triple Crown

The 2000 Guineas is the first leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred racing. The series involves 3-year-olds, but it’s a tough, tough thing to complete.

Following the 2000 Guineas, the Derby and then the St Leger completed the series.

It’s rare these days that anyone really goes for it.

The last time that a horse completed the Triple Crown was in 1970 when Nijinsky became just the 15th to complete it.

The last horse to attempt the Triple Crown was Camelot in 2012 when he finished as the runner on the final leg.

2000 Guineas 2021 Recap

POETIC FLARE delivered a score from a chunky 16/1 SP in last year’s renewal of the Market Classic.

Ridden by Kevin Manning for trainer Jim Bolger, Poetic Flare had to dig deep into the well to get there after leading from 1f out.

He was under huge pressure from MASTER OF THE SEAS who did briefly pull into the lead.

It was a massive scrap against Poetic Flare, Charlie Appleby’s charge pushed into second by a short head only.

The trainer almost got his big breakthrough in the Classic. Will 2022 be his year?

The race 9/2 favourite BATTLEGROUND had a torrid time of things as he started to weaken heavily a long way from home.

He was eased back, with suggestions of the undulating track just not being in his favour.

But there are some obvious big threats here, notably from the Godolphin duo of NATIVE TRAIL and COROEBUS.

They are big players but LUXEMBOURG is a really fascinating entry as he carries the victory from the increasingly important trial of the Futurity at Doncaster.
