2011 Glorious Goodwood Betting Preview – Punters eagerly awaiting Frankel & Canford Cliffs Sussex Stakes Showdown

Horse Racing Betting

2011 Glorious Goodwood Horse Racing betting is the big feature of the calendar next week. The superb festival starts on Tuesday, July 26th and runs until Saturday, July 30th. This often spectacular feature, in which the ladies will be out in force with their hands and the jockeys and trainers will be gunning for glory. The big feature race of the 2011 Glorious Goodwood festival, is the Blue Square Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap) which goes on Saturday, but the Sussex Stakes, for the big showdown between Frankel and defending Champion Canford Cliffs may prove to be one of the highlights of the week in the “Duel on the Downs.". Glorious Goodwood betting is worth looking at now, as the cards are lining up, and already there are some very attractive ante post betting prices for Glorious Goodwood. Below is our guide to the horse racing festival, which includes two Group 1 races over the course of the five days in Liverpool. There is also the great feature of the straight runs, as used for the Stewards Cup, in which the horses only have to contend with uneven groups. If you look at draws, then horses which draw the higher numbers are going to have some favouritism. Get ready for another action packed week of top quality British horse racing betting, and let us guide you through the early markets.

Tuesday, July 26th

2.35pm The Bet365 Gordon Stakes (Group 3) – 1 Mile 4 Furlongs
This is one of the feature races for Glorious Goodwood betting of day one. Here we have Fiorente, trained by Sir Michael Stoute as the outright 5/4 favourite with Ladbrokes. Fiorente has gotten shorter in the ante post odds already, and that is on the back of a second place finish at Ascot in June. Fiorente just did not have the pace and finish to topple Nathaniel in that race, but will be fancied here. There is an evenly match trio behind, with Slumber, Fulgur and Nambian floating around 6/1 at the moment. Slumber looks an interesting punt, as is gaining popularity, but hasn’t been able to get good clear runs in the last two races (which were both third place finishes). Nambian will need to run a strong race from the get go as well, as not sure the finishing speed is really there to trouble Fiorente.

3.10pm The Bet365 Lennox Stakes (Group 2) – 7 Furlongs
Interesting bunch of runners here, and we’ll start with a look at Yaa Wayl, who has been hit and miss, but capable of pulling out a big win. Won a good race at Newbury at the end of June, but hasn’t been in the greatest form this year. Here the big threat will come from Delegator, who has one win this year, up in York. Couldn’t get close to the leaders in recent Newmarket race after being held up and finished a disappointing fifth. Still, experience and talent is there, would be a popular winner. Another interesting prospect is Majestic Myles, who could made a decent showing in Glorious Goodwood betting, after displaying some good finishing strength in last outing.

3.45pm The Bet365 Molecomb Stakes (Group 3) – 5 Furlongs
Should be all about Best Terms here, as Richard Hannon’s unbeaten charge goes for further glory. It has been three career wins out of three, all this year, and looks a fine prospect. There’s actually a really competitive field here. Would look out for Stonefield Flyer to put up a good strong race, but with other names like Crown Dependency, Angels Will Fall and Vocational, to name but a few. This should be an epic challenge, and good value in the Glorious Goodwood betting for this one.

Wednesday, July 27th

2.35pm The Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes (Group 2) – 7 Furlongs
Going to be tricky picking out a winner in this tough field here. Harbour Watch will go as one of the favourites, with two wins out of two career races. Not the only unbeaten horse in the field though, which should make this feature race a very good one. Trainer Richard Hannon has a rich pot in this race, with Red Seventy, Rockinante, Rougemont, Minal and Pearl Charm going alongside Harbour Watch. A good challenger to Hannon picking up the winner here, will be Jeremy Noseda’s Roman Soldier, who has been running solidly. Should be a cracker of a race, keep tracking those ante post prices in Glorious Goodwood betting.

3.10 pm Qipco Sussex Stakes (Group 1) – 1 Mile
One of the top races of the week, as it is a big showdown between Canford Cliffs and Frankel. What a race we should be in for here. Canford Cliffs looks such a class act, and has won four straight Group 1 mile races after picking up the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Nothing wrong with form, and is ready for this massive showdown with Frankel. As for Frankel, who is unbeaten in his career, not looking as if he is going to falter any time soon. If you are looking for things to split these two, then you are going to be splitting hairs. It is that close. Canford Cliffs is the defending champion of the Sussex Stakes and is not going to want to give up the crown easily, but Frankel is an astounding talent as well. The rest of the field is probably going to be obscure here. Will Frankel be able to join the illustrious list of Sussex Stakes winners, like Rip Van Winkle, Henrythenavigator and Giant’s Causeway? The Canford Cliffs team are gearing up for the challenge of taking down Frankel, and think that they can get an early advantage because of Frankel taking time to get up to early pace. One key factor to recognise here, is that Frankel is on his own, unlike he was at Royal Ascot, when he had a pacemaker to pull him along. The Sussex Stakes is a small field, and no room for the pacemaker, so this could be a slower paced race than Frankel will like. Frankel does take a long time to settle, which means energy gets wasted, because he is impatient. Does Frankel have the temperament to get over this? This is such a fascinating race, in which Frankel has to make the pace on his own, which he will probably naturally do, heading down hill from the off. Any wasted energy there, could led in Canford Cliffs. Canford Cliffs will fancy a slower race, so that he can pounce at the death, and probably outpace Frankel there. It is exactly what happened, when he took Goldikova in the Queen Anne Stakes, his great finishing speed taking him clear. The Duel On the Downs is on!

Canford Cliffs: 5/2 at Bet365

Thursday, July 28th

2.45pm The Audi King George Stakes (Group 2) – 5 Furlongs
Another evenly matched field which should produce a good race. Looking at the card, we are torn between a couple of name. Ed McMahon’s Noble Storm looks in good enough shape and ranking to take this race by the scruff of the neck. There is great talent in this race, with potential from Swiss Diva, who has strangely disappeared a bin the last two races after dominating in 2010, and Kingsgate Native, who is carrying a high official ranking for this race, but hasn’t won for over a year. Noble Storm should be a serious contender.

3.15pm The Artemis Goodwood Cup (Group 2) – 2 Miles
Big field here and a strong, fast race should be ran. First look is at Fox Hunt, who has been in excellent form this year for trainer Mark Johnston. Another of Johnston’s entrants, Colour Vision has gotten better and better this year, and really should make a strong run for the front. Fascinating field, like most of Glorious Goodwood betting for the week, it should be highly competitive.

Friday, July 29th

3.10pm The Totesport Mile (Heritage Handicap) – 1 Mile
One race which many punters are looking forward to, if for no other reason than to see if Green Destiny can deliver again. Recently won in York to confirm his high stock, and that was a good bounce back performance after he just couldn’t make any impact at Ascot in June, looking a bit tired and lacking staying power. But Green Destiny is red hot favourite to pick up victory here in Totesport Mile Glorious Goodwood betting, because it is a little hard to see where serious challengers in the field are going to come from. Rave looks to be the biggest threat in the Totesport Mile betting, after picking up back to back wins in July at Ascot. Talent is there, but whether or not it is going to be enough to topple the supposed destiny of Green Destiny is another matter entirely. The price on Rave has shortened a lot in ante post betting (but shop around and you can pick up incredible value at the moment – see below for the value of ante post betting!), simply because he is going to be a big challenger. Not sure where anyone else is going to hit the front from at the finish line, perhaps Rhythm of Light, also a winner at Ascot in June, but not the proven class of the other two, and is stalling in trading.

The Toesport Mile Horse Racing Betting Odds
Green Destiny: 4/1 at SkyBet
Dance and Dance: 12/1 at SkyBet
Sagramor: 10/1 at Bet365
Rhythm of Light: 12/1 at SportingBet
Highland Knight: 14/1 at Boylesports
Belgian Bill: 14/1 at SkyBet
Invisible Man: 14/1 at Stan James
Rave: 14/1 at Victor Chandler

Saturday, July 30th

3.10 pm The Nassau Stakes (Group 1) – 1 Mile, 1 Furlong
Looking forward to this one, as we get to see Misty For Me in action, as she looks to add further success to her year, after winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas. She is going to have a big challenge on her hands though, as Snow Fairy, a star of the English and Irish Oaks last year looks to be going well. There will also be a challenge from Midday, who is the defending Nassau Stakes Champion, but compared to the form of the other two, she needs to up her game, as she has not won this season yet. You’ll get short prices on these three, because this will be a highly quality charge. We think that Snow Fairy looks so ready and in perfect shape to take Nassau Stakes betting by storm, and is good value. This is a very high class field, but with

3.45pm The Blue Square Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap) – 6 Furlongs
Well, here the star attraction Hoof It, has been consistently cut in trading price in Antepost Blue Square Stewards’ Cup odds. This looks as if it is going to be destined to be a two horse race for glory here in one of the big races of the week. This final day of Glorious Goodwood could really go with a bang in this race, and the dominance of Hoof It was undone a little bit after a 7th place finish at Ascot in June. Hoof It did touch the front in the race, but just could not find any turn of finishing speed to compete in the end. That will give Mac’s Power a good look in here, as the James Fanshawe trained five year old looks for a first win this year. With a second place, a third and an eighth place in 20111, Mac’s Power has not it the heights of last year when his game was really stepped up. So we are going to stick with backing Hoof It here for the Blue Square Steward’s Cup, after winning at York on Saturday by three quarters of a length. Hoof It went with top weight, and needed a strong guidance from Kieren Fallon, but the horse, partly owned by golfer Lee Westwood held on well at the end to take the victory in the SkyBet Dash. May be worth looking at Hawkeyethenoo, who won the SkyBet Dash last year under Fallon. The Jim Goldie trained horse did win at Ascot in May by two and a half lengths. Looks the best behind the main two.
