2011/12 Premier League Football Betting Preview Series

A club by club guide to the new Premier League season

Premier League Betting

No surprises as to who is leading the way in 2011/12 Premier League betting. Manchester United are starting the new season as favourites. The defending champions had a mixed season last year, struggling away from home, but crushing pretty much everything that came before them at Old Trafford. With Alex Ferguson strengthening his squad with the likes of Phil Jones and Ashley Young (plus possible Wesley Sneijder), will it be more of the same from the Red Devils? Their closest challengers again look to be Chelsea, who are now under the guidance of Andre Villas-Boas. The young Portuguese manager comes from the same mould as Jose Mourinho, under whom he has worked at Chelsea and Inter Milan. There is a lot of promise surrounding Villas-Boas, but can he man handle the aging Chelsea troops and get them playing with intensity and style again, something which was lacking last season? Chelsea have the money to expand their squad, but with many players like Nicolas Anelka deciding to stick out their last year of contracts, Chelsea don’t have many spaces in their squad to work with. Manchester City will again look to close the gap on the big two after finishing third last year. The Eastlands crew have money to splash around, and wasted no time in brining in Sergio Aguero to bolster the front ranks. They may also have Carlos Tevez still available, although he wants away from the club, as a deal with Brazilian side Corinthians fell through. Manchester City arguably have the best quality of depth in their squad, and after tasting silverware success with the FA Cup last year, they want more. Boss Roberto Mancini does however have to play a balancing act with player rotation, especially with them venturing into the Champions League this season. As for Arsenal, they are still the most attractive side to watch in the Premier League, but their beautiful game is not winning them titles and trophies. With big names being linked with moves away, what will the Gunners have to offer? They faltered last season with lack of fight, so can they bounce back, or is Arsene Wenger’s day’s numbered at the Emirates?

So where will your 2011/12 Premier League betting decisions go? The title race looks set to be another close call, with Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City the main protagonists there. We should see Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham battling it out for those precious places in Europe at the end of the season. The relegation battle looks to be wide open with the new boys and those who just about managed to avoid the drop last season. The Premier League welcomes QPR, Swansea and Norwich to the ranks this season after successful campaigns in the Championship. QPR won the Championship with great aplomb, and while there always seems to be some drama behind the scenes at the club, it will be interesting to watch their progress. Any newly promoted club immediately gets touted as relegation candidates, but there were established names who could be in for a long season if they don’t improve from last season. Swansea, Norwich and QPR are the favourites to take the drop in 2011/12 Premier League relegation betting, with Wigan, Wolves and Blackburn not too far behind them. There is a strong crop of middle of the table teams who will be scrapping it out, so we will wait to who can rise from the mix to grab the European spots. Will Tottenham be able to make another good impression on the season, or will Liverpool get their act together and really make a strong challenge towards the top four? Liverpool have been spending, and there is a good feeling of optimism that they can get back to some glory. The pressure will again be on the managers, and there are some new faces around. Alex McLeish at Aston Villa, following his move from relegation Birmingham seems to be under the most pressure. Martin Jol takes over at the helm of Fulham, but unless there are better seasons from Wigan and Blackburn, Roberto Martinez and Steve Kean respectively could be in the firing line. Could the unrest at QPR unsettle Neil Warnock first?
