Although there have been six different winners in each of the six races of the new F1 season, one glance the standings in the Drivers World Championship and you can see a pattern starting to emerge. Predominantly, that is the Red Bull team is getting stronger. After a slow start tot he season and surprising doubts over their ability to compete, especially with the new rule changes enforced this season, it looked as if the McLaren’s were going to dominate after starting strongly. Things have not panned out that way, and with two Red Bull drivers sitting second and third in the championship, then there is growing degree of consistency from the Red Bulls. Double world champion Sebastian Vettel has clawed his way up into second place, level on points with team mate Mark Webber, and therefore both are just three points behind leader Fernando Alonso. All three have picked up a win this season, with Webber the latest to taste victory at the Monaco Grand Prix at the end of May. The Red Bulls have had to make changes to their cars’ floors but have stated that it is not going to make a difference to their overall performance

So it has been an exciting season, and despite six different winners, Lewis Hamilton has yet to record one. Hamilton has only managed two podium finishes so far, both third place finishes in the first two races of the season. However, he set his stall out well on Friday, as he was dominant in both practice sessions, which should put him in a good mood and a good chance of finally tasting success this season. So Hamilton looks as if he is going to be quick out in Canada, but there really wasn’t too much discrepancy between the top drivers. The Ferrari’s of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa occupied two of the three fastest runs as well on Friday, and Vettel was only around 100th back in fourth place from third. It is a tough track, one on which grip can be hard to lay down at first, because the surface is quite smooth. So what conclusions can be drawn from the practice sessions? Well, the biggest one of all is that Lewis Hamilton was very competitive and quick and he could well line up for his third Canadian Grand Prix title after winning in 2007 and 2010. Watch out for Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari though, as the team looked as if they were not going to be a threat at all this season, but the Spaniard is running very, very well.
