Race for a top four finish narrows

The cream seems to have risen to the top. Phil Taylor came through his double duty trial in Birmingham last week to move himself up to third spot in the Premier League Darts standings. After a gruelling draw against Raymond van Barneveld, Taylor went on to wrap up a comfortable 7-2 win over Dave Chisnall in his second game of the night. That has left Taylor three points btheind Michael van Gerwen and Barneveld (who are level on 20 points). But the heat isn’t off The Power in the race for a top four finish and a place at finals night. That is because both Peter Wright and Gary Anderson are only only a point behind him.

Phil Taylor v Peter Wright is therefore the big clash of the week as the action moves on to Newcastle, the penultimate week of the regular season. A win for Taylor would confirm a place in the top four, while a win for Scotland’s Wright would keep the race wide open. Wright beat Taylor 7-4 back near the start of the season, but Taylor is on a nine match undefeated streak, while Wright has only won one of his last five. That will keep supremacy in the favour of Taylor, who is 4/7 to beat Wright (4/1) on Thursday.

Gary Anderson is the other man in the play off mix and he needs to capitalise on a big week in Birmingham last week, where he caused a massive upset in beating leader Michael van Gerwen 7-4. The Scot is in pretty decent form too, with three wins and two draws in his last five. He goes up against Dave Chisnall, who has lost his last three on the bounce. So Anderson, at 5/6 to beat Chisnall looks likely to keep alive his push for a top four finish. It should be a tense night on Tyneside.

The night’s other big match sees a Michael van Gerwen v Raymond van Barneveld showdown. The two are tied at the top of the pile and will both will be looking for a win which will give themselves an edge in the battle to finish top. It was Barneveld who took a 7-5 win when the two met earlier in the season, producing a tremendous 107 three dart average in that matchup in Glasgow. Barneveld is 23/10 to win, with Mighty Mike at 11/10. Adrian Lewis v Robert Thornton is the other game of the night, both already having been eliminated for a chance of a top four finish.
