Mexico favourites to land Gold Cup again

Well, the summer has been stacked with football tournaments to keep punters interested while awaiting the return of European domestic action. We have seen the U21 European Championships, the FIFA U20 World Cup and the Confederations Cup all deliver some exciting summer action and now taking up the reins for the month of July is the CONCACAF Gold Cup which will be the 14th edition of the biennial tournament from the North, Central and Caribbean region. This is being hosted in the USA and the tournament will be played across 14 cities.

The action starts on July 7th and it will conclude on the 26th of the month. Twelve CONCACAF nations are there with North America getting three teams, four berths going to Central America, four to the Caribbean, and one to the winners of the play-off between the two fifth-placed teams of the Caribbean zone (2017 Caribbean Cup) and the Central American zone (2017 Copa Centroamericana), the latter qualifier being Nicaragua who won that play off.

So with all of that sorted, making their debuts in the tournament are French Guiana who aren’t actually FIFA members so don’t have a ranking. They are the only new nation to make it to this edition of the tournament. It is Mexico who are trading as outright favourites at bet365 to win the Gold Cup and they will be going back into this edition as the reigning champions as well. Since the inception of the CONCACAF Gold Cup back in 1991, it has been won by either the USA or Mexico each time, with the exception being Canada’s success in 2000.

2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup Preview

This is one of the international tournaments where you have two very strong sides and basically you are just waiting to see if they are going to get upset along the way and nothing else. We are talking about Mexico and the USA of course who are the frontrunners for the tournament. It is Mexico who have been dominating the CONCACAF Zone in World Cup 2018 qualification, having taken four points against the USA from their two meetings there and with a strong Confederations Cup campaign under their belt already in having reached the semi final in Russia, they are favourites to take the Gold Cup title.

The top two sides from each group advance to the knockout stage and they will be joined there by the two best runners up from the group stage.

Mexico 6/5

The Mexicans are the most successful nation at the CONCACAF Gold Cup with seven title victories under their belt, including the win back in 2015. That’s three of the last four Gold Cup crowns that they have claimed and therefore it is hard to not back them for this one. They are a nation in some good form, they are very strong and resilient and we have seen that Confederations Cup over the summer. They do have issues at the back of not being able to keep opponents off the board but then again, the quality level of the opposition isn’t going to be all that high and they should be a banker to win their group for sure. They have plenty to offer going forward and look devastatingly quick on the break. Even in their heavy 4-1 loss against Germany in the Confederations Cup semi, they create enough good chances to have tied the match. They can rack up the goals in this tournament against lesser opposition.

USA 5/4

The United States are not as strong at the moment as perhaps they could be which is strange with the progress that the MLS is making. Anyway, they are scraping along in World Cup 2018 qualification where they have lost to both Mexico and Costa Rica so far. They will probably get to Russia 2018, but they have plenty of work still to do in order to ensure that they don’t miss out. So this could be a nice distraction for them at the Gold Cup, a chance for boss Bruce Arena to get a really good look at the options that he available. He has steadied the ship after their horrid start to World Cup 2018 qualifications which saw Jurgen Klinsmann get the sack. Defensively they have their big weaknesses at the moment and are lacking quality through the middle of the park. They will want to avoid Mexico for as long as possible.

Costa Rica 6/1

The Costa Ricans are enjoying a pretty solid World Cup 2018 qualification campaign and they would be hoping to translate that into Gold Cup success. They are pretty decent at the moment and should be competitive and they will have a good shot at winning their group at bet365 as well because even though Honduras are the seeded team in Group A, Costa Rica looks a much better side. If you are going to look for a surprise winner outside of Mexico and the USA, then Costa Rica would be the ones. They beat the USA 4-0 in World Cup 2018 qualification but did lose out in Mexico. Costa Rica’s best ever finish at the tournament was a runners-up place in 2002. They finished third in 2009.

The best of the rest

The CONCACAF Gold Cup usually ends up looking pretty lopsided because the two North American heavyweights are so strong. If anyone is going to come through, then it’s not likely to be Canada at all, who offer very little threat so you would have to go and look at the nations from the Central American Zone along with Costa Rica. Both Honduras and Panama both lack scoring power, but of the two the defence of the Hondurans is far, far worse. Panama at 16/1 with Bet365 are actually a very strong defensive side as they have shown in a draw with Mexico and two draws with the USA in World Cup 2018 qualifying. So that suggests that they could scrape along and cause some upsets, taking their chances in penalty shoot outs in the knockout stages. Perhaps worth an each way bet.

So Panama make our best dark horse option for CONCACAF Gold Cup 2017 betting, but as a winner, then that should fall to Mexico. They are much stronger than the USA are at the moment and will have a lot of confidence from their good run to the semi finals of the Confederations Cup. that extra competitive action under their belt will serve them very well.
