British Grand Prix 2018 Preview – July 8th, 2018

Lewis Hamilton lost the Drivers’ Championship lead last weekend in a what was a terrible race for Mercedes in Austria. Another tactical mistake from Mercedes and reliability issues for both Hamilton and teammate Valtteri Bottas made a mess of the team’s weekend. So now Hamilton will try and have to heal those Australian wounds as he takes on the challenge of his home Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend.

It had actually been looking all so very good for Mercedes last weekend, as Bottas went from Pole Position with Hamilton behind him. But right from the off things started to go wrong. Bottas had a horrible start and was down to fourth by the first corner and he went out of the race on lap 14. Hamilton was challenged by Kimi Raikkonen off the starting grid as well and eventually, after a mess up in pit stop tactics, Hamilton retired with a loss of fuel pressure.

There could potentially be grid penalties for both of the Mercedes drivers at the British Grand Prix on the weekend because of their car failures in Austria. Hamilton goes as the 10/1 odds-on favorite to win* (betting odds taken from July 5th, 2018 at 7:50 pm) at Silverstone this weekend and that would certainly help bury the nightmare of last Sunday and put Hamilton back at the top of the Drivers Championship, where he trails Sebastian Vettel by a point now.

This season’s big feature is the race between Vettel and Hamilton to become the first driver to win five Drivers Championship titles. That has added to the pressure of their rivalry. Hamilton has won just one of the last four races now (his success at the French Grand Prix) but then Vettel has won just once (Canadian Grand Prix) since the second race of the season in Azerbaijan.

2018 British Grand Prix Pole Odds*

Lewis Hamilton 4/6
Sebastian Vettel 9/4
Valtteri Bottas 4/1
Kimi Raikkonen 20/1
Daniel Ricciardo 25/1
Max Verstappen 25/1
Bar 250/1

Hamilton’s Silverstone Track Record

You really can’t argue with the form that Hamilton has at the British Grand Prix and rightly he is the favourite for this weekend. You will remember back to 2008 on that wet track when he got his first ever British Grand Prix title in front of home support and he has won each of the last four races there. So he is the one to beat without question at Silverstone. Maybe Austria was just teething troubles for Mercedes who had delivered a lot of updates to their cars for that race.

Vettel has history against him because Ferrari hasn’t won at Silverstone since 2011 although the German did win the 2009 edition at the circuit while driving for Red Bull. Ferrari though as a whole look to have lost a bit of momentum and Vettel is at 4/1 odds* (betting odds was taken from July 5th, 2018 at 7:50 pm) and the second favourite to win the 2018 British Grand Prix.

Red Bull challenges

Now the Ferraris have to concern themselves more than ever with the Red Bull team. Max Verstappen put in a wonderfully controlled performance last weekend to take the title in Austria which is where the Red Bull team are based so that was a big momentum for them. A Red Bull has now been on the podium in each of the last five Grands Prix for this reason, two wins in there, one each for divers Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo who won that dull Monaco race back at the end of May.

So they are becoming a threat with a bit more reliability and the best way to back either of those would be to look in the Top 3 Finish Betting Odds at bet365 for the British Grand PRix. There Verstappen is at 6/4 with Ricciardo at 11/4 odds* (betting odds taken from July 5th, 2018 at 7:50 pm). Those are good options to consider as we see Hamilton being so strong at his home Grand Prix this weekend.
