Britain's Woods in freestyle medal contention

Olympics

One of Britain’s best hopes of bringing home a medal from PyeongChang, James Woods will be gearing up in the early hours of Sunday morning to go for gold in the Men’s Slopestyle skiing competition. The Event is scheduled to start at 4:15 am GMT on Sunday, so you will have to be up early for this one. It could be worth it though.

Back at Sochi 2014, Woods was seen as one of the front-runners in the competition, but with the track coming under heavy scrutiny, Woods suffered a hip injury in the warm-ups on it and that subsequently hampered his runs at trying to get a medal. That having been said he did still manage to get a fifth place which was a huge achievement considering the hip issue and pain he was in because of it.

Since then, he has continued his upward trend in the sport, winning the X Games and the World Championship medal since then. He is a competitive guy and although his build up to the 2018 Winter Olympics was hit with a problem after breaking his collarbone last year, but he does appear to be back, or at least very close, to his best. He came home fourth in the X Games just back at the end of January.

Woods is trading at 14/1 with Bet365* (Betting Odds taken on February 7th, 2018 at 9:48 p.m.) to get the gold medal in the Winter Olympics 2018 Slopestyle. That’s a big price and at least worth an each-way shot for him turning it out. So if he such a strong talent, then why the big price?

It is because the field is absolutely stacked with talent. From outright favorite Oystein Braaten and Norwegian compatriot Ferdinand Dahl, to Andri Ragettli and Henrik Harlaut, to the Americans Gus Kenworthy and McRae Williams there is some serious competition knocking around in this event and coming through such a stacked field is going to need the very best that Woods has got, just to get on the podium.

Men’s Slopestyle Winner Odds

Øystein Braaten 7/2, Henrik Harlaut 4/1, Andri Ragettli 9/2, Nicholas Goepper 7/1, Gus Kenworthy 15/2, Ferdinand Dahl 12/1, Evan Mcachran 14/1, Oscar Wester 14/1, McRae Williams 14/1, James woods 14/1, 28/1 bar* (Betting Odds taken on February 7th, 2018 at 9:48 p.m.)

Men’s Slopestyle Predictions

Backwoods to get a medal, but it may well not be gold. The effort that Woods produced four years ago after injury and his recent success, notably in the worlds, puts him in contention. You are looking for somewhere who can pull two good runs out of the back and therefore consistency is key.

You couldn’t look beyond the Braaten and Harlaut for that. Sweden’s Harlaut won the X Games and he looks great value to go and get a gold in this one as well. He was just a little more consistent at the X Games Aspen 2018 including qualification for the final and therefore he is well worth considering.
