Hosts can thrill home fans in group stages

Football Betting

Switching the Africa Cup Of Nations to summer from it’s traditional slot at the start of the year will probably invoke mixed feelings among the top European clubs.

On the one hand, a summer staging of the tournament means that players aren’t taken away for six weeks in the middle of one of the busiest times of the season. On the other hand, those same players are being denied  a rest before the start of the new campaign and there will inevitably be injuries and some delayed returns.

Cameroon are the defending champions but have lost the right to stage this year’s tournament on home soil. The CAF ruled that the Cameroon authorities had not made sufficient efforts to guarantee the safety of spectators and the teams taking part so the competition was switched to Egypt.

Group A Predictions

Switching the tournament’s venue has undoubtedly favoured the north African teams and new hosts EGYPT will have benefited more than most.
The most successful team in Africa Cup Of Nations history, they just came up short when beaten by Cameroon in the final two years ago. The Pharaohs can call on Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah for inspiration and they look banker material to qualify at the top of Group A in front of their own supporters as they will be based in Cairo.

Group B Predictions

NIGERIA failed to qualify in 2015 and 2017 but won the Africa Cup Of Nations the last time they appeared in the finals.
The current brood of Super Eagles have plenty of goals in them and also plenty of pace with the likes of Ahmed Musa. They look to have been given an easy draw against Guinea and two countries who are making their debuts in the finals and look another sound bet at 4/7 with bet365.

Group C Predictions

Senegal are the number one team in Africa according to FIFA but we all know how unreliable those rankings can be!
They have Sadio Mane, of course, and a strong defence and are one of the form teams arriving at the tournament but ALGERIA will give them a run for their money in this section.
Djamel Belmadi’s team are also in excellent form and their squad includes Premier League winner Riyad Mahrez. The Desert Warriors are available at 13/8 to win Group C.

Group D Predictions

Morocco coach Herve Renard knows what it takes to win an Africa Cup Of Nations.
He’s already won the competitions twice with different countries and has turned his current charges into a tight and cohesive unit who play a high-pressing game. Unfortunately, they seem to have lost their way a little at just the wrong time and it’s probably not to their advantage that this year’s tournament is being staged in the summer. A re-emerging South Africa are dangerous opponents but IVORY COAST (5/4 with betway) have several players with something to prove, including Wilfried Bony and Saido Berahino, and may take the opportunity to put themselves in the shop window.

Group E Predictions

TUNISIA are a stand-out at Evens with bet365 to win this section.
Coached by veteran Frenchman Alain Giresse, the Eagles of Carthage are a decent footballing side and had a morale-boosting win in Croatia in their warm-up games. They may not have the cutting edge to go all the way but are another team who have been handed an apparently easy draw in the group stages against Mali, Mauritania and Angola.

Group F Predictions

Cameroon struggled through the qualifying process and there appears to be some disharmony in the camp. The defending champions have become a bit predictable under Clarence Seedorf and are certainly worth opposing in Group F at a best 6/4
GHANA are a best 4/5 with several big firms including bet365 but all is not sweetness and light among their ranks either. Asamoah Gyan has twice changed his mind about playing and doesn’t get on well with the manager. They have the quality to make an impact and often make the last four but also have the potential to implode.

After the group stage, the top two teams and the four best third-placed teams will advance to the round of 16.
