Race Favourite

NORTHOFTHEWALL is the current 10/3 favourite for this opening contest of our Aintree racing preview* (betting odds taken from Ladbrokes at 19:16 GMT on Friday, 6th October 2020).

He took back to back wins over the hurdles in novice efforts last season.

With a reappearance run under his belt, he looks in good shape to launch a bold bid here.

That recent run was at Uttoxeter in a field of 18. It wasn’t the cleanest of jumping performances from Northofthewall but it obviously got some rust out so he should do better.

Aintree racing Odds & Tips

CANELO is not to be counted out of action in this one. He has also had a reappearance run, which was an exercise of him getting air in his lungs.

He was well down the field in that contest and he looked like he needed it. That was Canelo’s first run since March when he scored at Huntingdon. Cheekpieces also go on for the first time.

We are going to swing to QUOI DE NEUF as the final selection for the race. Was up against some high-quality opposition last season in handicap hurdle action.

Given that he is a former point winner then he has some claims in this one. With progress to come it doesn’t look beyond him at 4/1* (betting odds taken from Ladbrokes at 19:16 GMT on Friday, 6th October 2020).

Race Favourite

MR SCURMPY Is the current 4/1 favourite for this handicap hurdle* (betting odds taken from Ladbrokes at 19:16 GMT on Friday, 6th October 2020).

He opened his account for the season at the first time of asking.

In taking on a 3m trip for the first time Mr Scrumpy got a win at Wetherby.

That was just immediately picking up from where he left off last season, in winning form. So he is still on the up and warrants some respect in this contest.

Aintree racing Odds & Tips

PORTRUSH TED is worth a look in the contest. On his return from a long absence in January, he picked up a win on his first handicap appearance.

He is coming back for a reappearance run in this one as well as he goes on what will be just his fourth attempt over the hurdles. Portrush Ted is unexposed but not to be totally counted out.

GOLAN FUTURE will get the headgear back on for this trip. He will be coming back to a 3m trip which will play to his strengths.

Golan Future won at this distance in a listed handicap at Cheltenham 12 month ago.

This will be his second run of this season after opening with a finish in the middle of the pack at Cheltenham (2m 5f) last month.

We think he’s worth a look at 7/1* (betting odds taken from Ladbrokes at 19:16 GMT on Friday, 6th October 2020).

The current market leader is Dan Skelton’s BENNYS KING who is the 5/2 favourite* (betting odds taken from Ladbrokes at 19:16 GMT on Friday, 6th October 2020).

The big moment for him last season came at Newbury when he won a handicap chase to really raise his stock.

The last run that Benny’s King had was in January when he showed up in chase action at Ascot on a 2m 5f trip.

He put in a solid effort there, rattling the crossbar. Benny’s King was only beaten by a neck in that contest and is expected to go well again.

Aintree racing Odds & Tips

DRUMCLIFF is worth a look in this fixture as well. Last month he collected a good third place in a field of nine in a Fontwell handicap.

That was a very good return to form for the Harry Fry-trained gelding. On the back of that, as well as sitting on a good mark of 130, there is a threat there from him.

SPRINGTOWN LAKE will likely be a danger in this contest if he returns to action in top shape. He was in fairly good spirits at the Cheltenham Festival on his last appearance in March.

He was 9th in a field of 23 in a Grade 3 Chase. That was straight after a score at Warwick in February as the favourite.

Race Favourite

The race favourite in this small field is THOMAS DARBY at 11/4* (betting odds taken from Ladbrokes at 19:16 GMT on Friday, 6th October 2020). He was in good steady form last season getting in the frame in each of four trips.

The most recent of those was a third place in a Grade 2 contest at Fontwell. That followed straight after an Ascot handicap win.

Given that he is still low-mileage and the 2019 Supreme runners up highlights what he is capable of.

Thomas Darby has to enter the calculations.

Aintree racing Odds & Tips

CALL ME LORD also steps out for the first time this season. He is a pretty smart hurdler but didn’t quite get it together in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Last December though at that same venue Call Me Lord secured the International Hurdle. This is a great distance for him and is likely to be there or thereabouts.

The shorter trip will play to some of SUMMERVILLE BOY’s strengths as well in this contest.

Was last in action at the Cheltenham Festival this year, taking a good fifth-place finish in the Stayers’ Hurdle.

The 2018 Supreme winner carries some strong claims here and he has won refreshed before. We see just enough to swing towards him at 10/3* (betting odds taken from Ladbrokes at 19:16 GMT on Friday, 6th October 2020).

Race Favourite

The race favourite is DEFI SACRE at 10/3* (betting odds taken from Ladbrokes at 19:16 GMT on Friday, 6th October 2020).

He was in unstoppable form at the end of last season, as he completed a hat trick. That feat was completed with a run at Newbury in December.

He comes back with a 5lb rise in the ratings. Given the way that he was going in the last campaign, he warrants big respect here.

This will all be down to how well he performs refreshed. The switch to the fences last season really saw him come into his own.

Aintree racing Odds & Tips

THE BIG BITE was starting to show well over the fences last season as well. He is now with Henry Oliver for the first time as he comes back into action for his reappearance run.

It was in his penultimate race that The Big Bite got off the mark in chasing. He followed that up with another very good effort at Haydock, so carries a threat.

NOTRE PARI is another that we can send to the shortlist for this contest. He was doing well over the hurdles last season. One of those was under handicapping here at Aintree.

Notre Pari has had a repparance run for the season, finishing 6th of 8 at Carlisle. But he is likely to be a look sharper for trainer Olly Murphy in this one.
