Ajax News and Form

Ajax are in the driving seat clearly now after Donny van der Beek’s first-half goal gave them the win in the first leg of this semi-final tie in London. So having earned an away clean sheet plus having put an away goal on the board, things are looking very good for Ajax at the moment. This is just the second European tie that Ajax and Spurs have competed in against one another. The previous one was back in the 1981/82 European cup winners cup first round. Spurs won that 6-1 on aggregate.

Ajax have been to 8 previous European cup semifinals and their record from those appearances has been six wins. They have however suffered defeats in their last two home games at the semi-final stage of the competition. They have played four previous home games throughout their history against sides from London. From that sequence of games, Ajax are W1 D1 L2. Their overall record in two-legged ties against English opposition is W3 L4. They have lost each of their last four.

Ajax have been so impressive on the road during the knockout phase of this season’s Champions League, winning all three games. In their two home games so far following the group stage, Ajax are D1 L1. However, those results picked up at home really have not hindered their progress, because they turned around the round of 16 tie after losing at home against Real Madrid, and then the draw was against Juventus before Ajax posted a win in cheering against them. In the knockout stage of the Champions League, Ajax have actually not won any of their last seven D4 L3. Ajax have won 25 of the 27 UEFA competition ties in which they won the away first leg.

Key-Facts – Ajax v Tottenham

  • Ajax are winless at home in this season’s knockout phase
  • Ajax have lost two of their four previous home games against London clubs
  • Spurs have won only five of their last 20 European away games

Tottenham News and Form

Tottenham have been going through a bit of collapse at the end of the season. With three defeats in their last four Premier League games, they now have to dig themselves out of a deficit in this European Cup semi-final. One positive that they can look at is that it is just the one goal that they need in Amsterdam to pull themselves back level in the tie. They will probably be back themselves to do that. They know on the night they need to score at least two goals in 90 mins and goals have dried up for them recently (one goal in their last five in all competitions). Back in the group stage they faced PSV Eindhoven and Spurs played out a 2-2 away draw, with a 2-1 home victory over the Dutch club.

Spurs were on a six-match undefeated streak of form against Dutch opposition (winning four) before their loss against Ajax in the first leg of this tie. They will be defending a four-match undefeated streak of form in the Netherlands (winning two) and the two draws have been in their last two visits there. Tottenham have an away record of W5 D2 L2 against Dutch opposition and the record that they have produced in away matches in the knockout rounds of the Champions League is W2 D1 L2.

Spurs have won only one of their five away games in this season’s Champions League. So they have had their difficulties on the road. Actually, Spurs have taken just five wins in their last 20 European away fixtures (D7 L8) and combine that with their current slump in form, this could be a difficult night for them. Spurs have lost all three UEFA competition ties in which they were beaten in the home first leg, most recently against Benfica in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League round of 16 (1-3 home, 2-2 away). They have some work to do and they are now fighting pressure and a slump in form.

Ajax v Tottenham Predictions

Ajax to win: given the current form that Tottenham are in, it’s hard to see them turning this tie around. Ajax are capable of handling themselves and they look full of running while Spurs have looked more and more jaded towards the end of this long season. Home win.
