Angers News and Form – French outfit to give the Gunners a good game?

Angers have had a decent pre-season campaign thus far, winning three, drawing one and losing one. Stephanie Moulin’s men kicked off with a 3-1 win over Les Herbiers, with victories over Orleans (1-0) and Le Havre (3-2) following.

Having drawn 2-2 with Feyenoord in Rotterdam, Angers were beaten for the first time in pre-season last time out, falling to a 2-1 defeat to German side Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend.

Angers had a good season in the French Ligue 1 last term, going on to claim a 13th-place finish. Along the way, Moulin’s troops won ten, drew 16 and lost 12 of their 38 league matches. They were not an easy nut to crack at home, with just eight teams winning at the Stade Raymond-Kopa in Ligue 1. Angers have one of the smallest budgets in France’s top tier, so finishing in 13th spot was no mean feat.

Angers beat the likes of Monaco, Lille and Nice last season, and they are a more than capable outfit on their day. The French side will be looking to end their pre-season campaign on a high before facing Bordeaux in their opening Ligue 1 encounter next week.

Angers v Arsenal Head to Head

Wednesday’s Angers v Arsenal friendly clash at the Stade Raymond-Kopa in France will be the first ever meeting between the two clubs.

Key-Facts – Angers v Arsenal

  • The Gunners claimed a fifth-place finish in the Premier League
  • Emery’s men missed out on the top four by a single point

Arsenal News and Form – Emery’s boys too strong for their French opponents?

Arsenal have had a mixed bag of results in pre-season. The Londoners started with successive wins over Colorado Rapids, Bayern Munich and Fiorentina, but defeats to Real Madrid and Olympique Lyonnais have followed.

In the International Champions Cup in USA, the Gunners saw off Bayern Munich (2-1) and Fiorentina (3-0). However, they were beaten on penalties by Real Madrid after a 2-2 draw in normal time in Charlotte in their final matchup in the States. Then last weekend, Arsenal lost 2-1 to Lyon at the Emirates Stadium in the Emirates Cup.

Emery had a decent first year at Arsenal, guiding the club to the UEFA Europa League final. However, the Gunners were thumped 4-1 by London rivals Chelsea in the Baku final in May. In the Premier League, meanwhile, they finished in fifth place, one point behind rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who claimed the final UEFA Champions League spot.

Arsenal were superb at the Emirates in the league last season, but their form away from home was dreadful. Despite finishing in fifth, Emery’s troops picked up just seven away wins, losing eight times along the way. Their results on the road will need to improve this year if they are to break into the Champions League places.

In terms of injury news for Wednesday’s game; Arsenal could be without striker Alexandre Lacazette, who picked up an ankle injury last time out. Mesut Ozil, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Sead Kolasinac are doubts while Dani Ceballos could start in a Gunners shirt for the very first time.

Angers v Arsenal Predictions

Arsenal win: Before facing the mighty Barcelona in the Camp Nou this weekend, Arsenal will be looking for a win in Angers on Wednesday, especially after last Sunday’s disappointing loss to Lyon in the Emirates Cup. The Gunners should keep Angers at bay, so have a punt on the visitors to win to nil, which is nicely priced at 12/5. Meanwhile, I can see Emery’s side winning by a margin at the Stade Raymond-Kopa. Therefore, check out the solid odds of 7/4 for Arsenal to win -1.
