APOEL News and Form – Can Cypriots handle the big home test?

It was a second qualifying round start for APOEL in this season’s Champions League. They eased paste Sutjeska 4-0 on aggregate there. They then had to mount a comeback after losing the first leg at home in the next round against Qarabag. But APOEL collected a clean sheet win on the road to turn the tie on its head. Only one of their four games so far this season in Europe have seen both teams score in.

They are carrying a little bit of home form with them, which Ajax should be wary of. The Cypriots are W5 L1 in their last six European home fixtures and in that sequence of games have four clean sheets. If they win this tie they will be back in the Champions League for the first time since 2017 when they finished bottom of their group.

What a campaign Ajax had last season. They started in the second qualifying round and ran to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals against Tottenham, the Dutch were just seconds away from making it through. They only lost two of their 18 European games last season (W10 D6) in what was a long campaign. Ajax have a record of W2 L1 in their three previous trips to the Champions League playoffs.

Ajax won the Eredivisie title for the first time since 2014 earlier this year as well as doubling up with the Dutch Cup. They entered the qualifiers this season in the previous round, where they struggled to get past PAOK. Ajax drew 2-2 on the road in the first leg and then an 85th-minute penalty from Dusan Tadic back at home, saw them ended up taking a 5-4 aggregate win. Ajax are W4 D2 in all competitions this season, scoring at least two goals in all games.
