Argentina News and Form – Can Argentina beat Colombia in opener?

Argentina will be looking to shake off some heartbreaking results from recent Copa America campaigns. They have lost four of the last five finals at the tournament. That’s some tough going. The last two have been back to back penalty shootout defeats against Chile, both after 0-0 draws. So Argentina will be looking to go one better.

Will Lionel Messi be able to lift them towards success? Time is running out for him to get a major international trophy. Messi is part of a powerful attacking until that Argentina have, alongside Paulo Dybala and Sergio Aguero. They didn’t take Inter’s Mauro Icardi with them to the tournament though.

A general trend of Argentina is that they are a bit lifeless at major tournaments. With all the attacking talent that they have been blessed with over the last decade, they have never really developed into a powerful attacking side. That having been said they were scoring so well in the last edition before failing to get on the board against Chile in the final.

Their warm-up has been fairly low key and they are W6 D1 L2 in their last nine games. Argentina have taken a win in four of their last five played, and within those, there were three clean sheets. That was two against Mexico and then against Morocco. But they failed against at last summer’s World Cup and with their Copa America failures, there is pressure on them. Can they get it right?

Colombia News and Form – Will Colombia win against Argentina?

There is a good threat to come from Colombia at the 2019 Copa America. They have had a pretty good build up and are W5 L1 in their last six played. They have done alright in front of goal as well, scoring at least two goals in five of their last eight. Ahead of the tournament, they finished their warm-up campaign with back to back 3-0 successes over Panama and Peru.

They put together a good World Cup 2018 qualification campaign, before losing out in the round of sixteen against England once there. They earned themselves a third-place finish at the last edition of the Copa America. To earn that, they got a 1-0 win over the USA to get that. That was Colombia’s best finish at the Copa America since they lifted the title for the one and only time in 2011 (in the Copa America era).

So Los Cafeteros do look to be in good shape at the moment, even if they are relying on the ageing legs of Radamel Falcao up front. Even though they have been scoring well lately, a world-class fresh pair of legs up top could perhaps be missing. Maybe Atalanta’s Duvan Zapata will make a big impact after his good season in Serie A.

Argentina v Colombia Predictions

Draw: It’s actually hard to see either of these coming out and going for the big win in this one. In fact, it may all end being a cautious, low key affair to open with. A draw would be alright for both of these as the rest of the opposition in their group isn’t great. Draw.
