Argentina News and Form

Argentina came up short against Colombia in their group opener at the 2019 Copa America. Despite looking the stronger of the two teams, they couldn’t break their opponents and ended up suffering a 2-0 defeat. That will have been highly frustrating for them not having at least gotten on the scoresheet given their front line. That leaves the Albiceleste with a W2 L2 return from their last four games, and now they have to desperately go in search of a momentum builder instead of relaxing. At the end of the day though this should be a winnable fixture for them, with Paraguay not looking good. Argentina though have only managed to score more than one goal in one of their last four games now.

Sergio Aguero Anytime Goalscorer

Argentina do struggle at times to be the attacking force that they should be. In the last edition of the Copa America in 2016, they did rattle off 18 goals in 5 games, but they couldn’t find their touch in the Final and lost on a penalty shootout to Chile after a 0-0 draw. So the loss against Colombia will have shaken them up and Lionel Messi took it pretty hard. Argentina have taken a W5 D2 L1 (over 90 minutes) record in their last eight Copa America games. In each of the games that they failed to win in that sequence, they failed to score in as well.

Paraguay News and Form

So Paraguay are not in form. They failed to win their easiest game of this group as well. They played out a 2-2 draw with Qatar in their opener. They had picked up a 2-0 lead in the game as well around the 55th minute, but couldn’t close it out. Paraguay had been second best in possession in the game. But they allowed Qatar to get one back in the 70th minute and then Paraguay’s Rodrigo Rojas put through his own net to settle the game at 2-2. While it was an uninspiring result, it was a nod towards their poor form.

Since the beginning of 2018, Paraguay have managed to win just one fixture. That one fixture was a recent game against the lowly-ranked Guatemala. Paraguay have gone and taken just a poor W1 D3 L4 record from their last eight games. As a positive, they are W1 D2 in their last three games and they have put together a four-match scoring streak. They have just the one clean sheet in their last eight games, which was from the fixture against Guatemala. With their failure to beat Qatar that leaves Paraguay on a six-match winless streak of form in Copa America fixtures (W4 L2).

Argentina v Paraguay Predictions

Argentina to win: We expect a win for Argentina even though they had that hammer blow of a loss against Colombia. They should get plenty of the ball in this one and Paraguay are not carrying any kind of form and their defence isn’t likely to stand up to Argentina like Colombia’s did. Argentina to win to nil.
