In the last round, however, they lost the first leg of their tie against BATE away from home and had to turn it around in North London. They did so with a 3-0 home win. Rennes have never been this far before in a UEFA Competition campaign and they have set themselves up well to potentially push on further. Going to back to the group stage they only qualified for the knockout stages with a crucial win on matchday six. Then in the round of 32, they knocked out Real Betis in an upset. The only time prior to this that they had met an English side was a 2001 Intertoto cup semi-final against Aston Villa in which the two traded home wins.
Rennes are in their second Europa League campaign. In their first attempt at the competition back in 2011/12, they only managed three points from three home draws. On match day five of this season’s campaign Rennes won 1-0 at Jablonec and that was their first away win in eight games in Europe.
