Arsenal News and Form

Arsenal have to mount a comeback performance in this one then. They eased through the group stage of the competition. In the last round, however, they lost the first leg of their tie against BATE away from home and had to turn it around in North London. They did so with a 3-0 home win. They need a 2-0 minimum here to turn this around. The Gunners have won only three of the 13 UEFA competition ties in which they were defeated away in the first leg, one of those happening against BATE.

Alex Iwobi had given Arsenal a great start in the first leg, putting the Premier League side ahead in the first half. However, Sokratis Papastathopoulos received a red card before half time and Arsenal fell apart. That was the telling moment. This will be Arsenal’s 26 game against French opposition and their 13th on home soil. The Gunners have won 5 of 12 previous home games against French opposition, losing three. They played out a 2-2 draw with PSG in their last home games against Ligue 1 opponents in the 2016/17 Champions League group stage. The Gunners have won four of five two-legged UEFA ties against French teams. They lost their last one though, against Monaco in the 2014/15 Champions League.

Key-Facts – Arsenal v Rennes

  • Rennes have won their last two away games in the competition

Rennes News and Form

Rennes have never been this far before in a UEFA Competition campaign and they have set themselves up well to potentially push on further. Going to back to the group stage they only qualified for the knockout stages with a crucial win on matchday six. Then in the round of 32, they knocked out Real Betis in an upset. The only time prior to this that they had met an English side was a 2001 Intertoto cup semi-final against Aston Villa in which the two traded home wins.

Rennes are in their second Europa League campaign. In their first attempt at the competition back in 2011/12, they only managed three points from three home draws. On match day five of this season’s campaign Rennes won 1-0 at Jablonec and that was their first away win in eight games in Europe. They followed that up with a very impressive 3-1 win in Spain against Betis. Rennes have won four of the previous six UEFA ties after having won the first leg at home.
