Arsenal News and Form

This is no easy tie for Arsenal, who have certainly had a big drop off in form in the Premier League. A three-match losing streak (conceding exactly three goals in each) has left them with some difficulty in getting a top-four finish. So the Europa League may be the path for them into the Champions League next season, that’s how important this is. The Gunners made it to the semifinals last season of the competition where they were beaten by Spanish opposition in Atletico Madrid.

This time they take on Valencia, who could at the end of the day, are not going to be easy to deal with. Arsenal are W1 D1 L3 from their five previous games against Valencia and from their 33 previous matches against Spanish opposition, Arsenal have taken ten wins. Of the 15 losses against Spanish teams which they have suffered, three have been in European finals. Arsenal do have a positive home record against La Liga teams of W8 D4 L3 and their last two have been a 0-2 reverse against Barcelona and 1-1 draw against Atletico in last season’s semifinals.

The Gunners have lost their last four two-legged ties against teams from La Liga. But there are positives despite all of that. They made life easy for themselves in the group stage and have backed themselves with home advantage in this season’s knockout stages. In their round of 32 tie against BATE and round of 16 tie against Rennes, it was home successes that got them through after losing the away first leg in both of those ties.

They got it together through back at the Emirates. They started their quarter-final tie against Napoli at home and ended up easing past the Italians on a 3-0 aggregate, so may it works out better for them playing at home first. Arsenal have a W9 D3 L1 record at home in the Europa League and in that sequence of games, the Gunners have scored 31 goals and have conceded eight. The Gunners have banked a clean sheet in each of their last five home games as well.

Valencia News and Form

Valencia have lost their last two league fixtures, so maybe they have had one eye on this tie. They are sitting sixth in La Liga at the moment, but like Arsenal’s situation in the Premier League, Valencia have some work to do to scrap out a top-four finish and reach the Champions League next season.

Valencia started this season in the Champions League where they took a W2 D2 L2 in their group to finish third behind Man Utd and Juventus. They then were very composed in eliminating Celtic in the round of 32 before taking out Krasnodar. That set them up with a local derby against Villarreal in a massive quarter-final tie.

It turned out to be a pretty one-sided affair though, with Valencia winning the first leg away from home. They ended up 5-1 winners on aggregate. So Valencia unbeaten in their six Europa League games played this season. This is their third appearance in the semifinals of the Europa League, and their two previous appearances both ended in defeat against fellow Spanish teams.

Valencia have lost just two of their last seven European games (W2 D3). Before their 3-1 success at Villarreal in the last round, they had been on a four-match losing away streak in Europa League quarter-finals and semi-finals combined. So they have stopped that rot.

Valencia aren’t a bad side at all, perhaps their one downfall is that they don’t score heavily. They are the lowest scoring team inside the top six in La Liga currently for example. Only one of their six Europa League matches this season have gone over 2.5 goals this season.

Arsenal v Valencia Predictions

Arsenal to win: The Gunners did a superb job at home against Napoli in the last round and despite their current form, have done well at the Emirates in the Europa League. Valencia have the strengths to make a fist of this but aren’t a free-scoring side. Arsenal to win by a one-goal margin.
