Here we are then, the one that we want to see, a Grade 1 clash between SHISHKIN and ENERGUMENE.
Nicky Henderson’s Shishkin, uneaten over the fences, is the current 4/6 favourite* (odds recorded at 08:39 GMT on January 21st, 2022 at Coral).
He is something special and was last seen continuing his progress with a routine victory at Kempton in a Grade 2 last month.
That was as easy as you like and it was Shishkin’s first run after a wind op.
Last year’s Arkle winner at Cheltenham firmly confirmed his status as a top-class novice.
Now he faces the biggest challenge of his career. Will he follow in the footsteps of Altior and Sprinter Sacre from the same stable and win this?
Can Energumene bring down Shishkin
It barely registers that this is just a small field, because of ENERGUMENE and Shiskin looking untouchable.
Energumene is undefeated as well in his career over the fences.
The Irish challenger was pushed on in a Grade 2 contest at Cork last month to get himself primed for this.
He won it, extending his unbeaten form.
There was some beautiful jumping form by him in that one.
He is a big player for Willie Mullins and will head to this year’s Cheltenham Festival regardless, as one of the potential big stars of the entire show.

Can First Flow defend?
Also in the hunt for success is FIRST FLOW at 9/1* (odds recorded at 08:39 GMT on January 21st, 2022 at Coral)
First Flow won last year’s Clarence House Chase and is a high-class chaser in his own right.
But he has two major rivals to try and upset.
The 10-year-old returned to action for the first time this season with a victory in the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon.
He’s clearly not lost anything since his break.
But having to take down both Shishkin and Energumene, well, that’s a big ask of him.
What can Amoola Gold do?
AMOOLA GOLD looks as if he could be well out of his depth at Ascot on the weekend.

He has been a smart chaser and picked up a course and distance win on his reappearance.
On his latest, he made no headway whatsoever in the 2m Cheltenham handicaps.
