Ashleigh Barty v Karolina Pliskova Preview – 2nd September, 2018

There is a highly competitive-looking fourth-round duel coming up from Flushing Meadows on Sunday as young Australian Ashleigh Barty lays down a serious challenge to Karolina Pliskova. Both of them are sat as 20/1 odds options* (betting odds taken on September 1st, 2018 at 11:45 pm) to win the tournament outright. The prize, if you can call it that, could be a place in the quarter finals against Serena Williams.

Ashleigh Barty v Karolina Pliskova Odds*

Ashleigh Barty 4/6
Karolina Pliskova 6/5
* (betting odds taken on September 1st, 2018 at 11:45 pm)

Barty can be pretty happy with her progress so far as she has come through her second without having dropped a set. She was perhaps helped out in her quest by 12th seed Garbine Muguruza falling early so Barty got to avoid her. She still gets a tough game in his one as she takes on Pliskova who is the 8th seed at Flushing Meadows this year. Barty is 18th but this has the look of being quite the battle.

We have to back this one to go over 2.5 Sets at 11/8 odds* (betting odds taken on September 1st, 2018 at 11:45 pm) as their most recent meeting, which was in China last year, went that way. The final two sets were both won on a tie-break. That was the only previous hard court clash between them and from their three previous matches overall, it is Barty who is 2-1 ahead over the Czech star.

Pliskova, who isn’t playing doubles like Barty is has powered her way through to the fourth round. There were some questions over he from coming into this but she seems pretty together. This will be a big game for Pliskova who hasn’t quite lived up to expectation in the Slams. She was a quarter-finalist here last year though and that was a being a losing finalist the year before. She has struggled to get past quarter finals in recent tournaments so her form isn’t high, as she’s the underdog for this duel.

Prediction

We are going with Pliskova, who has had a tough 2018, to dig in there and get the job done here. The price on her is pretty appealing and there have been a couple of moments in this tournament where she had held her never in tie-breaks to close out matches. She isn’t on top of her game at the moment, but Barty hasn’t been seriously challenged yet. We’re taking a look at the underdog at 6/5 odds* (betting odds taken on September 1st, 2018 at 11:45 pm).
