Aston Villa News and Form

Aston Villa ended their season in stunning form, claiming ten wins from their last 12 matches. However, after a club-record ten successive victories, the Villans picked up just one point from their last two Championship games, drawing 1-1 with Leeds United at Elland Road before losing to Norwich City. Last weekend, the Canaries, who were crowned champions, beat Villa 2-1 at Villa Park, with City’s Mario Vrancic scoring a late winner.

Aston Villa have been hard to beat on their own patch this season, with only Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds, West Brom and Norwich picking up league wins at Villa Park. Before losing to Norwich on the final day, the Villans had won five Championship home games in a row. Overall, they accumulated 41 points from 23 home fixtures.

After missing out on promotion to the Premier League in the Championship play-off final last year, Aston Villa will be desperate to go one better this time around. Even though the Villans finished the season four points behind the Baggies, Smith’s troops are fancied to book their place at Wembley Stadium for a second season running.

West Bromwich Albion News and Form

It’s been a strange season for West Bromwich Albion, but the club managed to keep themselves in the top six practically all year. Back in early March, Darren Moore was harshly sacked after a minor blip of two defeats and one draw, with James Shan taking over on an interim basis. Under Shan, Albion have won six, lost three and drawn one.

West Brom had a disappointing end to their regular season, losing 3-1 to Derby County at Pride Park. Stefan Johansen levelled shortly after half time, but two quickfire Derby goals did the business for Frank Lampard and his men. To make matters worse, Hal Robson-Kanu was sent off for a kick at the end. Prior to that reverse at Pride Park, the Baggies had been in good form, as they had picked up ten points from a possible 12. Meanwhile, each of their last four league wins have come at The Hawthorns.

On the whole, West Brom have been very strong away from home this term, winning 11, drawing four and losing eight to take 37 away points. However, their form on their travels lately has been very poor, as the club have taken one point from an available 12 and lost four of their last six.

Aston Villa v West Bromwich Albion Predictions

Aston Villa win: On paper, these two Midlands rivals look pretty evenly matched. However, with the first leg taking place at fortress Villa Park, I fancy the Villans to pick up a narrow win. West Brom usually find the net, so take a punt on Aston Villa to win and both teams to score. Also, I’m backing the home team to open the scoring on home soil on Saturday afternoon.
