Britain’s Andy Murray is the defending champion and he is back to defend the title in a field in which he is the standout star. ATP Brisbane Betting Favourite and Defending Champion
Andy Murray took the title here last season against Alexandr Dolgopolov in the final and is the star attraction in a somewhat limited field. He really shouldn’t be troubled at all here but he didn’t go with a bang in Abu Dhabi last week in an exhibition tournament where he lost his first match against Janko Tipsarevic. Not sure how much you can read into that, because he has been in big training mode as part of his preparations for the Australian Open. Early season form can be forgiven a bit, but there shouldn’t be excuses for Murray in a tournament like this. Big year for the Scot after claiming his first Grand Slam title last year. Other Contenders
Right on the other side of the draw and a likely final opponent for Murray is young Canadian Milos Raonic. Arguably the most promising rising star on the Tour, Raonic has a massive serve on him, an absolute missile and has caused Murray problems before. Raonic beat Murray in Tokyo and Barcelona last season, but Murray did cruise past him on his way to the US Open title. Raonic, the world number 13 and hot property right now, is going for his fourth career title and will be a big threat. Growing in stature all the time and the big threat to Murray in the field and therefore worth a look at a price of 4/1 at online bookmaker Stan James for his Brisbane debut.
Frenchman Gilles Simon has the talent to at least make the semi finals here. His last tournament of 2012 was a semi final run at the World Tour Masters 1000 Paris and he started the season with a semi final run in Brisbane too. He holds a 4-4 record at the event and should make an impact. He is down in the bottom half of the draw as well, and would run into Raonic at the semi final stage if it pans out like that. So the world number 16 should be in for a good shot here. Simon will have the flair, Raonic the power.
Best Outside Bet
Ukrainian Dolgopolov is probably worth a look here after reaching the final here last season. He holds an ok 6-3 record in Brisbane, and like Raonic, could be a big season of forward momentum for him. The world number 18 has kind of plateaued over the last year, but has bigger potential. Has two career titles and this is his fifth appearances at Brisbane and didn’t have a bad 26-17 record on hard courts last year. Could only happen if Murray crashes as they would be lined up for a semi final meeting.
