Can Medvedev get another deep run?

Daniil Medvedev lost in the final on the opening week of the 2019 calendar year to Kei Nishikori out in Brisbane. That was a blow, but at least it has shown that he has come out fighting with some positive form this year. That will naturally make him a threat in this field and he goes at the 3/1 second favourite* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on January 6th, 2019 at 6:04 p.m.). Perhaps the only question would be fatigue for the week having had a full week of action. Will, that catch up to him later in the week?

There would be good opportunity for Alex de Minaur to put something together down in the same quarter. He showed glimpses last year of some strong form and this could be a big year ahead for him. De Minaur goes as fifth seed for the tournament.

Tsitsipas top seed

At the top of the draw is first seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. He is ranked 16th in the world currently and he made a huge breakthrough at the back end of last year, winning the Nextgen Finals. So now the pressure is on him to perform ever bigger and better this year.

Opposing Tsitsipas up in that top half of the draw is 6th seed Lucas Pouille and those two could be a reasonable enough semi-final line-up. The section that Pouille has found himself in is full of qualifiers and you would expect the Frenchman to put some kind of a decent run together. The one hiccup in his plans could be America’s Ryan Harrison would face Pouille early in the second round.

Another American trading well enough is Sam Querrey in the third quarter. He would get a tough early clash against fourth seed Gilles Simon in the second round if he gets past his first round match.

Predictions

This is going to be interesting to see how Tsitsipas handles himself in situations like this through the year where he finds himself as favourite. That’s a whole heap of pressure on his shoulders to try and deal with. Our pick though is Lucas Pouille who could easily find the draw really opening up ahead of him and making a run at the 10/1 odds* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on January 6th, 2019 at 6:04 p.m.).
