ATP World Tour Finals 2018 Preview

The ATP World Tour Finals finally arrive and the action starts on Sunday, November 11th. Roger Federer will be in action on that opening day. The Finals are missing Rafa Nadal who had to withdraw because of injury which means that we won’t get the dramatic shootout for the end of season World Number 1 spot between him and Novak Djokovic that would have happened.

With Nadal’s absence, Novak Djokovic automatically will now end the season in the number one spot. Can he end the season in style by collecting the World Tour Finals title? He is the 8/13 odds-on favourite to do so* (betting odds taken on November 9th, 2018 at 7:00 pm)

ATP Finals 2018

Novak Djokovic

It wouldn’t exactly be any kind of a surprise to see Djokovic win this group and just win the whole thing outright without batting an eyelid. He has produced some powerful strong form at the back end of the season. He won three tournaments in a row (Western & Southern Open, US Open and the Shanghai Masters) before slipping up in a shock defeat against Karen Khachanov in the Rolex Paris Masters final at the start of the month. He did beat Federer along the way, but even the best can have their off days.

Djokovic has a head-head lead this year from meetings against everyone else in the tournament aside from Zverev and Anderson and that’s because he hasn’t played them in 2018. Against Cilic he is 3-1 up this year and he is 2-0 up over Isner. Djokovic has won the ATP World Tour Finals five times before, a win here puts him level with the all-time leader Federer.

Roger Federer

Six-time ATP World Tour Finals winner Federer got the Swiss Indoors title in October to give him his fourth title this season. His biggest title of the year was his success at the Australian Open which was the 20th Slam title of his career. He showed some form as well with a semifinal run to the Rolex Master and then at the Paris Masters. He lost in the semi’s in Paris to Djokovic but interestingly Federer never had his serve broken in that match. He has a comfortable group to get through.

Federer has a 1-0 head to head against Anderson this year and a 4-0 over Nikishori. He has not met Marin Cilic in 2018. The last time that Federer picked up at the ATP World Tour Finals was back in 2011 when he took down Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final.

Alexander Zverev

This is the first time that the German has been at the ATP World Tour Finals. He has had a pretty solid season and his big wins for the season started at the BMW Open where he defended his title. He then won his third Masters event with a success at the Mutua Madrid without dropping a set along the way and beating Dominic Thiem in the final. He went to the final of the Italian Open as well and lost in the final to Rafael Nadal. That snapped a hot run of thirteen straight match wins that he was on. He hasn’t quite been as strong over the second half of the season, but hit the semis in the Shanghai Masters and last in the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters.

The only other player in the field that Zverev has a positive lead against in the head to head is Marin Cilic 2-0. Although he hasn’t met Djokovic, Anderson, Nishikori or Isner this season.

Marin Cilic

Marin Cilic was the player who ended a massive 30-set winning streak that Novak Djokovic was on recently when he took one against the Serbian at the Rolex Paris Masters. Cilic still lost the match though. The Asian swing of the season over the latter stages of the season wasn’t really been all that great for Cilic at all, so he isn’t carrying great form through to the end of the season for him. Being in the tough group alongside Zverev and Djokovic isn’t going to help his case too much either.

The only player at the ATP World Tour Finals that Marin Cilic has a positive head to head record against this season is Kei Nishikori 2-1. He has faced everyone else except for Anderson and Thiem.

The Others

John Isner is the outsider and he gets his place at the tournament because of the withdrawal by Rafael Nadal. Kei Nishikori hasn’t been all that bad with his form although he can blow a little hot and cold. He got to the final of the Erste Bank Open which was his third Tour final of the year, he won that. Nishikori, who is in the final because of the withdrawal of Juan Martin del Potro, made the quarterfinals of the Rolex Paris Masters.

Dominic Thiem was pretty much anonymous over the second half of the season. He started to come good though to some degree with a semi-final at the Rolex Paris Masters. That was his first semi at a Masters on hard court. None of them looks to have quite enough to pull off a shock title.

Prediction

Given the comparative form of the eight taking part, there is no question that is should be a success for Novak Djokovic. He has shown more than enough down the back strength of the season that he can pull level with Federer on titles in this event. Unless Federer goes on a tear, then we can’t see any kind of upset happening in this one and have to back the favourite.
