Australia v Wales Preview
Australia opened with a 39-21 win over Fiji. However, they had to do a lot of chasing in the game because time and time against the Fijians tore their defence apart with strong running in the backs. This was also the game where Reece Hodge got his retroactive ban for a high tackle on Peceli Yato. Hodge would go on to score the second of Australia’s tries in the match as they fought out the victory.
Australia made the trip to the Millenium Stadium last November and lost 6-9 against the Welsh. That is the only defeat that the Wallabies have suffered against the Welsh in the last decade. But is it a sign of things to come in this fixture? Four years at the World Cup Australia landed a 15-6 pool stage win over Wales. Eleven of the last thirteen wins that Australia have taken over Wales have been by a margin of less than points.
Wales eased to a 43-14 win over Georgia, collecting the bonus point with relative ease. It was basically nothing more than a warm-up fixture for them and this one against the Wallabies is where it all counts. Wales did go full strength against Georgia and they had built up a big enough half time lead to ease back with replacements for the second. There have been a lot of narrow misses by Wales against Australia in recent meetings. Can they get it all right on the day?
