China to dominate in Glasgow?

Sports Betting

Glasgow plays hosts to the Badminton World Championships which being on August 21st and runs through to the 27th. The event is held at the Emirates Area and this is the first time since 1997 that Glasgow has hosted the World Championships. There are five tournaments being played across the course of the week and those are the men’s and women’s singles, plus men’s doubles, women’s doubles and a mixed doubles tournament. So it feels like it has been a long time since the 2015 Badminton World Championships which were held in Jakarta, Indonesia. Combined, the British home nations failed to deliver a single medal.

The last medal won by a British player at the Badminton World Championships was back in the 2011 edition in London when Chris Adcock and Imogen Bankier claimed silver in the mixed doubles. Back at the Rio Olympics in 2016, British pair Chris Langridge and Marcus Ellis collected a bronze medal, the first time that Team GB had earned one in Badminton since 2004 and because that was just the third medal for GB since Badminton was entered into the Olympics. But because of the lack of medals, funds were cut for the sport and only 12 England players remained on a reduced-rate. It’s been a bit of a mess and all 12 of those players were withdrawn from the World Mixed Team Championships back in May.

That was the first time that England hadn’t sent a team to a major Badminton championships. So there is a bit of a feeling of doom and gloom from the British based perspective here but Langridge and Ellis at least bring a bit of hope to proceedings, but they are a big 22/1 price at Coral to go and win the Men’s Doubles. The World Championships doesn’t award any prize money, it is for prestige and honour only and it does offer big ranking points along with the Summer Olympic Games. This will be the 23rd edition of the Badminton World Championships which started life back in Malmo, Sweden in 1977.

Badminton World Championships History

China are head and shoulders, the most successful nation in this history of the Badminton World Championships. Heading into the 2017 edition, they have taken 61 medals through the history of the Championships (all tournaments) with Indonesia the second most successful with a total of 21. Denmark and South Korea have each won ten medals at the end, while England have three. The only other nations to have won at least one medal at the Badminton World Championships are Spain, Japan, Thailand and the United States. Just going back to China, they have won at least two medals in all but two of the last twenty editions of the Badminton World Championships.

Men’s Singles

Of the twenty-two editions that have been contested, fourteen of the Gold Medals in the Men’s Singles have gone to China. Only Indonesia and Denmark have managed to produce gold other than China. The top seed in this year’s edition is South Korea’s Son Wah-ho but he is only a 15/1 shot at Bet365 to land the gold here. Second seed Lee Chong Wei is right up there for Malaysia at a price of 10/3 after his silver medal in 2015, while Dan Lin will be the leading force for China in this one at a price of 4/1. Chen Long is the outright favourite at a price of 11/4 to go and defend his medal for China.

Women’s Singles

If you think China have been dominant in the Men’s singles then hold onto your hat. There has been a China gold medalist in all but seven of the previous editions of the Badminton World Championships. That having been said, they have failed to pick one up in any of the last three editions, with Spain taking two and Thailand bagging themselves one. Spain’s Carolina Marin has won the last two editions of the Women’s Singles at the Badminton World Championships and she is the one to beat. Akane Yamaguchi is her severest challenger and the Japanese player is the top seed for this one, with South Korea’s Sung Ji-Hyun, the world number two, at 10/1. Will it be a hat-trick for Marin? Scotland’s Kirst Gilmour, who lost to Marin in the final of the European badminton Championship this year and in the final of the Canadian Open to Saena Kawakami is a 40/1 shot to win the tournament.

Men’s Doubles

Indonesia are the most successful nation in the Men’s Doubles, with nine gold medals. They triumphed at the last edition as well with Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan collecting gold over Chinese due Liu Xiaolong and Qiu Zihan. Trading well at 5/1 with Coral are Marcus F Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo for Indonesia while China’s Liu Cheng/Zhang Nan are around the 8/1 mark.

Women’s Doubles

China won the Women’s Doubles at the last edition through Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei who beat out Danish pair Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl. The Danes are 7/2 to one better this year while heading up the market as 7/4 favourites are Japan’s Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi while China Qingchen Chen/Yifan Jia are there as a 3/1 poke.

Mixed Doubles

Top seeds heading into the mixed doubles are Zheng Siwei/Chen Qingchen who are also 11/4 favourites to sweep the gold up. Denmark’s Joachim Fischer Nielsen/Christinna Pedersen are 7/2 second favourites. There is English interested here with Chris Adcock/Gabrielle Adcock at 16/1 to go and take the gold medal in what is probably the most competitively wide open tournament of the entire Badminton World Championships 2017.
