Barcelona News and Form

It is a 31 match undefeated streak of form that Barcelona are currently on in UEFA Champions League home games. However, despite that fantastic home record Barcelona have struggled in recent semi-final ties. The Spaniards have suffered three defeats in their last five Champions League semi-final ties. Three of their a semi-final defeats that they have suffered throughout the history of the European Cup/Champions League, have come against English opposition. However, they have won each of their last five two-legged ties against English teams. Their record in such ties overall is W15 L10.

This will actually be their fifth game this season against an English Premier League team. That was because they were against Spurs in the group stage, claiming a 4-2 win in London and then a 1-1 draw back on home turf. Then Barcelona faced Manchester United in the quarter-finals with Barcelona winning 4-0 on aggregate. It has been only the one defeat in their last 15 games played against English teams now, Barcelona winning 11 of those 15. So Liverpool will have their work cut out for them.

Barcelona’s home record against English opposition is W21 D11 L2, but interestingly both of the defeats in that sequence were against Liverpool. Barcelona have won eight of their last 10 home games against English opposition, drawing the other two. Barcelona have only lost one of their last 21 knockout stage UEFA Champions League fixtures, winning 13 of those. It is just such fantastic figures from them wherever you look.

Barcelona are undefeated in their last 13 knockout stage home fixtures, winning 11 of those 13. They have picked up four wins in their five home games during this season’s Champions League campaign, the only exception in that sequence was their draw against Spurs on matchday six. Barcelona had already won the group by the time that fixture came around. Lionel Messi will be stepping back out into action as the current top scorer in this season’s UEFA Champions League.

  • Barcelona have only suffered one defeat in their last 15 fixtures against English teams.
  • Liverpool are the only English team ever to have won at Barcelona in the European cup

Liverpool News and Form

It is in 19 match undefeated streak of form that Liverpool are on at the moment in all competitions. Of those 19 matches, Liverpool have taken a win in 14 of them. They need every ounce of positive form that they can get as they pay a visit to the Camp Nou. In regardless of their current form though they know that they are not going to get an easy game in this first leg. There are going to need a big performance from their defence because they are more than likely to come under some strong pressure from Barcelona.

The record of Liverpool in European cup semifinals is W8 L2. Liverpool have won their last 10 two-legged European ties, which includes their successes over Bayern Munich and Porto this season. This will be their first two-legged tie against Spanish side since going up against Villarreal in the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League semi-finals. The Reds lost 1-0 in Spain, before winning 3-0 back at Anfield.

That win over Villarreal on home soil is Liverpool’s only victory in their last eight fixtures against Spanish opposition, losing five of the other seven. Liverpool’s record against Spanish teams is just a little bit dodgy at the moment then. In their last game out in Spain and they played out a 3-3 draw against Sevilla in last season’s group stage. Away from home in Europe, Liverpool were on a four-match losing streak before claiming a second leg victory at Bayern Munich in the round of 16. They then earned a 4-1 at Porto in the following round.

Liverpool have suffered defeats in five of their last 12 European games, and each of the defeats in that sequence were outside of England. But now with their five-match undefeated streak in Europe, winning four of those, they have at least manage to turn around that form. They, of course, have their own goal-scoring threats and it is likely that they will pose a danger to Barcelona on the counter-attack. Sadio Mane has produced 11 goals in Liverpool’s 12 matches and now with Mo Salah becoming the Premier League top scorer last weekend, they do have the firepower.

Barcelona v Liverpool Predictions

Barcelona to win: there is enough in both of these to see them both get on the scoresheet in this game. Barcelona are just an absolute nightmare for teams to come up against in Europe at the Nou Camp. There is every chance of the home side collecting the win, but it is worth looking at both teams to score in the fixture as well, as Liverpool may well net a crucial away goal.
