Masters Snooker 2019 Preview – 15th January 2019 at 7.00 pm

This is Tuesday evening session match up at the Masters and the winner will be going on to the quarter to face whoever won the days earlier match between Mark Williams and Neil Robertson. The bookmakers appear to be having a hard time splitting the two in terms of favouritism. It is Hawkins who just edges things in the match outright though.

Shaun Murphy won the Masters in the 2015 season so has a nice bit of tournament history behind him in that regard. For the 2018/19 season, he has been to one final and that was a recent positive effort as well. He reached the final at the Scottish Open, the last ranking tournament to be played this season, where he lost against Mark Allen.

So that’s a nice bit of current form behind him. Barry Hawkins who took a win at the non-ranking Macau Masters back in October. His best moment at the Masters came in 2016 where he was a surprise finalist. He was beaten heavily 10-1 by Ronnie O’Sullivan on the day though. That remains the most lopsided final in Masters history besides Steve Davis’s 9-0 win over Mike Hallett in 1988.

Shaun Murphy leads the head to head between the two played 11-6. But it was Hawkins who has won the last two meetings. He took a 3-2 win over Murphy in last year’s Championship League and then at the Snooker Shootout. This will be the second time that Hawkins and Murphy have met at the Masters after clashing in the 2017 edition. Again there was a success there for Hawkins, who stormed to a 6-1 victory in the first round, the first stepping stone on his way to reaching the final that year.

Prediction

Another of the first round matches at the Masters 21019 which looks as if it will be a really tight call. But we are just going to stick with the bit of favouritism on the side of Hawkins at 4/5 odds* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on January 14th, 2019 at 6:17 pm). He has that little bit of head to head form going over Murphy.
