Belgium v Russia Preview

Belgium will be one of the front runners when Euro 2020 comes rolling around. It would be an extraordinary upset if they were to not get there. The last time Belgium met Russia was in a 2017 friendly and Russia held them to an exciting 3-3 draw. That still left Belgium undefeated against Russia with a W3 D2 record. Surprisingly Belgium had a slip in their Nations League campaign as they suffered a big 5-2 away loss at Switzerland in the final round of matches to end up finishing second to the Swiss in the standings. That will have hurt a bit. They won both of their home games in the group against the Swiss and Iceland. Their away loss against Switzerland snapped a run of six games undefeated by the Red Devils, since their World Cup semi-final loss against France. Belgium have scored at least two goals in six of their last seven played.

Key-Facts – Belgium v Russia

  • Belgium have lost one of their last seven games
  • The Red Devils have scored at least goals in all but one of their last seven
  • There was a 3-3 draw when Russia and Belgium last met

Russia’s Nations League campaign was not all that bad. They suffered a 2-0 loss in Sweden in their final match, a game which Russia only needed to draw to top the group. With a friendly defeat against Germany too, that is back to back defeats which Russia have been hit with. However, they were on a six-match undefeated streak of form before that (90 minutes) extending back into their brave World Cup 2018 campaign. Russia are always likely to be stronger on home soil and they have been pretty decent at the back. Because they were World Cup 2018 hosts, they didn’t have to qualify, so this will be their first qualification campaign for a major tournament since Euro 2016 when they qualified automatically. Russia have failed to score in three of their last four games so have gone a bit goal shy.

Belgium v Russia Predictions

Belgium to win: Belgium on home soil against a side who aren’t scoring goals at the moment. It has be a bit of a home banker but as the Red Devils are such a long odds-on price, Belgium to win to nil instead appeals at 21/20* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on March 18th, 2019 at 6:26 p.m.)
