He needed to dig in and battle through that one.
That continued some good form by the young Norwegian who has won his last eleven matches.
Ruud put together a stunning run of winning three titles in a row at Bastad, Gstaad and then Kitzbuhel in that run.
Those were all clay-court titles.
Now the draw has potentially opened up for him as he faces Dusan Lajovic for a place in the quarter-finals.
Lajovic caused a huge upset in knocking out the home favourite Felix Auger-Aliassime in the last round.
Lajovic had been the big underdog for that match.
The Serbian has met Ruud once before. That was last year in Argentina and Lajovic lost that.
Lajovic has won five of his last seven matches. But even that form pales to that of Ruud.

Tennis Betting Picks Today: Daniil Medvedev v James Duckworth
Tennis betting for today continues with ATP Toronto action with more Round of 16 action.
Daniil Medvedev, who is the top seed at the tournament, was made to work hard in his opener.
That was against Alexander Bublik, with Medvedev pulling through after having dropped the opening set.
It was the first match that Medvedev had played since losing in the Fourth Round at the Olympic Games.
This will be the first time that Medvedev has met Australia’s Duckworth.
Duckworth, who had lost three of four matches ahead of his appearance in Toronto, did make his way through qualification.
In the First Ruund he took out Taylor Fritz in straight sets.
Then he caused a big upset by taking out Jannik Sinner in the Second Round.
Sinner had gone to Toronto on the back of a title win in Washington over the weekend.
So Duckworth may be in a bullish mood and Medvedev has dropped a set in four of his last seven matches now.

Tennis for Today: Reilly Opelka v Lloyd Harris
Today’s Tennis betting tips rounds off with a match from ATP Toronto which looks as if it is more on an even keel.
This is right from the bottom of the draw and it sees American Reilly Opelka hoping to extend what has already been a very good run.
He opened with a victory over wildcard Nick Krygios, needing three sets to get the job done there.
That put him through to face 14th seed Grigor Dimitrov in the Second Round.
Opelka had smoother progress there, winning in straight sets.
This is the first time since the French Open that Opelka has managed to win two matches at a tournament.
South Africa’s Lloyd Harris is the one fighting with Opelka for a place in the quarter-finals.
Harris won the one previous meeting between the two players.
That was on a hard court surface in China in 2017.
He did win a couple of matches at Washington last week, notably getting a shock victory over Rafael Nadal, who pulled out of Toronto because of injury.
There doesn’t look to be much to choose between the two of these.
Because there has just been a little more consistency recently from Harris, he gets the nod in tennis betting.
