Considering that in his six previous tournaments, Opelka had managed to win back to back matches once, that was some effort in Canada.
Opelka meets Corentin Moutet in his opener in Cincinnati.
He had to come through two rounds of qualification to make the main draw here.
Moutet had been on a four-match losing streak in all tournaments before hitting the hard courts in Ohio on the weekend.
It has been six losses in his last ten matches.
Moutet did win the one previous match with Opelka which was on the clay in Lyon in 2019.
But for now, the clear form and confidence is with Opelka.

Tennis Betting Picks Today: Karolina Muchova v Johanna Konta
Tennis betting for today switches over to the WTA where Britain’s Johanna Konta is in action.
She was blighted with injury once again last week.
Playing in her first tournament since claiming the title at Nottingham in mid-June, Konta was in last week’s Montreal draw.
She had a walkover in the first round when trailing in the match against Shuai Zhang.
After a brilliant win over Elina Svitolina in the Second Round, Konta had to pull out of the tournament through injury.
In the opening match of her Cincinnati campaign, she runs into Karolina Muchova who she has never faced before.
Muchova was in Montreal last week. That was her first tournament appearance since a run to the fifth round at Wimbledon.
Muchova lost in the first round of Montreal last week against Oceane Dodin.
Specifically, on hard court surfaces, the stronger form is definitely with Muchova who reached the Sixth Round at this year’s Australian Open.

Tennis for Today: Caroline Garcia v Sloane Stephens
Today’s Tennis betting tips rounds off with a good-looking contest from the women’s draw in Cincinnati.
Sloane Stephens is the odds-on favourite for the match.
She has just been struggling for form as of late, struggling to make deep progress in draws.
In no tournament that she has played this year, has Stephens managed to win more than three matches in an event.
It has been a Second Round exit from her in the last two events, at San Jose and then last week in Montreal.
Four of the last five matches that Stephens has been involved in have gone the distance in sets.
Caroline Garcia is only ranked one place lower than Stephens in the world rankings.
The French player had to come through two rounds of qualification to get this, winning both matches 2-1 on the weekend.
Garcia did win a couple of matches in Montreal last week, leaving her with a W5 L2 record in her last seven hard court matches (including qualifiers).
Garcia is W2 L2 against Stephens in the head to head.
Notably, they met in Cincinnati last year and Garcia took the hard court win.
The underdog may be worth a punt.
