A Sheffield United fan landed a huge win on the horses by backing a rank outsider named Steel City. The ten-year-old horse was a big underdog as he hadn’t won in four years, but Blades fan took a gamble on the selection with a £30 stake at bookmaker Betfred.

Punter Colin Jacobs backed Steel city as one of four selections in the bet, starting with I Just Know in the 2.35 at Catterick, Zayfire Aramis in the 2.50 at Leicester, Mr Antolini at Leicester in the 3.25 – and finally Steel City in the 3.45 back at Catterick.

The gamble won Jacobs nearly £30, 000. There were odds of 8,000/1 on the bet that punter beat to land a sum of £29, 138 and it was all on outsider Steel City at the end of the day, who was ridden by Will Kennedy and trained by Mick Easterby, as he came home first by half a length.

62-year-old Blades fan Jacobs, who is a railway signaller, said: “I pick my horses based on who trains them but with Steel City, I had read somewhere and it was in the back of my mind that if he lost some weight he would do well.

“I have not been able to celebrate since I won on Thursday because I have been working.”

Betfred boss Fred Done said: “I have had my pocket picked big time by a very crafty Colin.

“He has done remarkably well and has got the new year off to a flyer.”
