Brighton News and Form

Brighton deserves a lot of credit for the way that they have started the new Premier League season. They came racing out of the gates and produced a 3-0 win away at Watford. It was a huge upset that not many people would have seen coming. They then managed to add to that by turning out a home point against West Ham. All four Brighton’s goals in this season’s Premier league have come from different players. But this has been a fantastic start for Graham Potter and his Seagulls. Can they keep their unbeaten streak going?

Earlier this year it looked as if Brighton could end up down in the Championship. It was just a season of struggle after struggle for them. At the Amex Stadium last season, Brighton picked up a record W6 D5 L8. They averaged exactly one goal per home game in that sequence of fixtures. So now if you take their home form from the back end of last season it is a six-match winless streak of home form that Brighton are on. In that six-match sequence, the Seagulls have claimed just two points, both from 1-1 draws. The game which kicked off that winless streak was a 1-0 loss against Southampton towards the end of March.

Southampton News and Form

It has been a tough start for Southampton in this season’s campaign. After all their struggles of last season, they were probably hoping for a positive fresh start after managing to hold onto their top-flight status. But it has been back-to-back defeats at the beginning of the 2019/20 season. Their first game of the season ended in a 3-0 away defeat at Burnley. Southampton were much better in their first home game of the season, losing 2-1 against Liverpool. They were fairly competitive in the fixture.

So Southampton too had their struggles last season. They finished fifth from bottom, the Seagulls only one place behind them. It was only four away wins that Southampton earned last term in the Premier League campaign (D4 L11). They averaged under a goal per away game last season and returned a clean sheet in only 21% of all of their road fixtures. Home and away combined Southampton have not taken a clean sheet in any of their last nine top-flight fixtures. So now this, combined with an early poor start, becomes an important South coast Derby for the Saints.

Brighton v Southampton Predictions

Brighton to win: It is only two games into the season of course, but Brighton look to be in pretty decent shape. They are full of running, playing some much bolder attacking stuff than they did the last term. Southampton haven’t gotten going yet and could struggle in this south coast battle. Home win.
