Bristol City v Leeds United Betting Tips – EFL Championship, 4th August 16.30pm

On Sunday afternoon in the EFL Championship, Lee Johnson’s Bristol City and Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United lock horns at Ashton Gate in the standout fixture of the opening weekend. The Robins will be pushing for a play-off spot this season, while United are the bookies’ favourites to win the division. This will no doubt be a cracking matchup at Ashton Gate, but who will prevail?

Bristol City News and Form – Can the Robins push for the play-offs?

Bristol City just missed out on the play-offs last season, finishing in eighth spot, four points behind sixth place. Nevertheless, the Robins had one of their best seasons in the Championship for years. Overall, City won 19, drew 13 and lost 14 of their 46 Championship encounters.

Their results at Ashton Gate cost them a top six position last season. Johnson’s side really struggled in front of their home supporters, winning just eight times on their own patch. Only Ipswich Town (three), Bolton Wanderers (four), Rotherham United, Millwall and Birmingham City (all seven) picked up fewer home wins.

Things were far different away from home, though, as Bristol City were one of the best travellers in the second tier last term. Norwich City and Sheffield United, who were both promoted to the Premier League, were the only sides better on the road, with the Robins picking up an impressive 38 away points.

The club have brought in the likes of Daniel Bentley, Tommy Rowe and Sammi Szmodics in the summer, with Frank Fielding, Eros Pisano and Lloyd Kelly moving on. Meanwhile, Brighton & Hove Albion have just bid £20m for City’s Adam Webster.

Bristol City are more than capable of causing Leeds problems on Sunday, but their home form will need to improve drastically this term if they are going to trouble the top six.

Leeds United News and Form – Can the title favourites get off to a winning start?

Leeds United go into the new season as the favourites to win the Championship title. United are available at just 9/2 ahead of this weekend’s trip to Ashton Gate. After missing out in the play-off last term, the Whites will be desperate to make amends this time around.

Leeds looked nailed on for a top two finish in the latter weeks of last term, but just one point from the last 12 on offer in the regular season put paid to their automatic promotion hopes. The Yorkshire club were then beaten by Derby County in the play-off semi-finals.

More players have left Elland Road than arrived this summer, with the likes of Pontus Jansson, Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Samuel Saiz – plus a number of others – all moving on. However, United still have one of the strongest squads in the league.

Bielsa is a very experienced manager, and Leeds have done very well to keep hold of the Argentinian. However, only promotion to the Premier League will do for the Whites faithful this season.

Bristol City v Leeds United Predictions

Leeds United win: Bielsa’s men will be eager to make a fast start after their disappointment in the play-offs in May. It will be very interesting to see how United cope with the favourites tag, but I fancy them to claim a big three points away from home on the opening weekend. Back Leeds to prevail at 7/5. The Yorkshire side beat Bristol City home and away last season without conceding a single goal. With that in mind, have a punt on Leeds to win to nil again on Sunday at 3/1.
